Question Spawn process on a remote machine

Hi,

I am trying to write a support utility for our network and would like to add a feature I found on PCAnywhere 11 and BeyondExec, where you are able to spawn process on a remote NT, 2000 and XP machine without the requirement of a client already being there.

They seem to connect to machines, then you get a username and password request from the machine and once authenticated on the remote machine the service is installed and in the case of PCAnywhere it installs a thing client and in the case of BeyondExec it seems to install a thin client that allows you access to the dos prompt on the remote machine.

This is very handy for us when working on remote users machines, but PCAnywhere is expensive for licenses per machine and RemoteExec doesn't offer all the features that we want.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to spawn a remote process on a machine like this with vb.net or can anyone give me a clue in what direction to look please?

I have been looking in to this for some time recently and it's proving not to be easy at all.

Many thanks.

i think RPC(remote procedure call) may be what your looking for but I am not too familiar with it. I just know this service is used for things like you described.

just my $.02

edit: the authentication is handled by active directory too i believe. so whatever user you use to use the service is what user has to have permissions on that remote machine.
