Default how to extract the character from an external serial device using mscomm

Hi, I'm using a serial keypad module connected to the laptop using mscomm. the keypad sends one characeter at a time, and serves as the input device for the id number and password.
I saved the string using this code and has no means of checking and it recognizes the backspace as a character itself
s = serialport.Input
Label1.Text = s
t = Asc(s)
lbldisplay.Text = t
Select Case t
Case "101"
d = 1
Case "102"
d = 2
Case "103"
d = 3
Case "104"
d = Chr(27) & "E"
Case "100"
d = 4
Case "99"
d = 5
Case "97"
d = 6
Case "98"
d = Chr(&H7F) 'backspace command to the keypad module
Case "27"
d = 7
Case "49"
d = 8
Case "50"
d = 9
Case "51"
d = 0
End Select
serialport.Output = d
user(j) = d
Label4.Text = user(j)
If j = 8 Then
user2 = user(1) & user(2) & user(3) & user(4) & user(5) & user(6) & user(7) & user(8)
Label2.Text = user2
end if

the user is the id number and is limited to 8 characters. How do i do it so that the character detection can choose and not include the backspace as a character itself and the backspaced character? I can't seem to figure out how to do that because I just recently learned vb for our undergraduate thesis, which includes this keypad module. Thank you.
