Default COM port 11?

This is not in any way my area but I have a problem that perhaps one of you can help with.

We recently purchased a Metrologic (Honeywell) Optimus hand held barcode scanner. After much hoohah I finally figured out how to get the canned software to talk to the device. That is upload menu instructions to the device and batch download data to my PC.

The device talks by IR to its cradle. The cradle connect to my PC via USB.
The product came with its own drivers. In device manager it shows up under Ports as COM 11.

The CD also came with VB6 code that purports to show how to download data from the device. Something I intend to leverage.

The issue is that the sample application does not work when run. It times out. I noticed that it makes use of the MSCOMM control. Is it capable of recognizing a COM 11 on Win XP?

If the mscomm control is not capable what is the recommended tool?

MS Comm control can handle ports 1-16 so you should be in good shape. Your only trouble is with things like multi-port USB serial boxes that assign to port #'s above 16 (you can re-assign those to unused ports in the 1-16 range usually though...).

Or to put it in the parlance of Nigel: "It goes to 11!"

Cheers.

EDIT: Came back when I remembered that you'll need to make sure to setup the handshaking correctly based on what the manual for your scanner says. Also note that if it is like the ones I've worked with before, you'll want to completely flush the input buffer when you first run the program since some scanners tend to spew garbage the first time you connect (never figured out why, just threw away the junk and then things were fine).

Back to work.

Been looking over the code that came with the device. Looks like VB was not the programmer's language. Mis-used VB functions galore.

Below is the settings for MSComm1. They seem to match the Device Driver Properties found under Windows Device Manager.

Code:
Sub OpenCOM() ' Close Port if Open If MSComm1.PortOpen = True Then MSComm1.PortOpen = False MSComm1.CommPort = Val(txtComPort.Text) MSComm1.Settings = cboBaudRate.List(cboBaudRate.ListIndex) & ",N,8,1" MSComm1.Handshaking = comNone MSComm1.InputLen = 0 MSComm1.PortOpen = True MSComm1.RTSEnable = True End Sub

I Traced the code in debug. Not easy with all the timers in there.
It appears to read "NAK" which the program uses to shut down with the time-out message.

Still Looking for better instructions in one of the manuals. Any other ideas?
