Saving an audio file inside the picture? As in having the sound played while the picture is viewed? You will need to elaborate on this matter for further assistance.

You can do it, but you need to create your very own filetype, where the first half is the sound and the second half is the picture. Then you have to make an application that handles it, but i wouldn't bother because there is such a filetype already its called a movie (avi, mpg, etc)
just create a single image in sony vegas or something and add a soundtrack.

You need to explain better what you want to do.

You want to store an audio file in a picture using encryption.
I don't see what encryption has to do with storing data in a picture file.
Are you talking about Steganography?

It sounds like steganography. You could use a 32 bits per pixel image in the XRGB format, where the alpha channel isn't used, and use that byte for audio data. Or maybe do as wikipedia says and use the lowest bit in the R,G and B channels of a 24 bpp image.

How big is the audio file, in bytes?

Have you read the articles? It's a pretty complicated topic but there's tons of information about steganography on the internet. Personally, I don't feel comfortable with discussing it in too much detail because along with the legitimate usages, steganography can be used to hide incriminating evidence from law enforcement. Personally, I don't see any legit reason for "I want to send data to someone in such a way that no one even knows I'm sending the data". I don't care if *you* have good intentions, I'd feel very bad if I publicly posted a steganography program that was then adapted and used by criminals.

That's just one reason I'm not ethically comfortable with just handing you copy/paste code. The other is you're likely getting a paycheck or a grade from someone for writing this. If I write the code, I should get the paycheck/grade, and for me to even make a consideration it should exceed the paycheck I'm already getting. (Hint: I try to set my price so high that forum members can't afford me. If you manage to dazzle me I'll just turn the offer down.) If, on the other hand, you do most of the work but ask for advice, I'm sure this forum can help. We aren't your servants, here to give you full-fledged applications for free. We are volunteers, pleased to offer discussion and ideas.

You need to study and understand the target file format very thoroughly. You're going to be making changes to the file and you need to make sure they are hard to detect and harder to decode. Trying to do this without understanding the file format will be like trying to paint a picture of a landscape you have never seen.

Once you understand that, you need to identify ways you can modify the file format without producing a discernable difference in the file. For example, if your target is BMP images you don't want the image to have the wrong colors. As jo0ls pointed out, several BMP formats don't use all of their bits for something. You can take advantage of this and store your data in the "dead" bits; most programs will simply ignore the dead bits and the BMP will look no different than it did beforehand. Other file formats are more involved.

Something that should be clear now is image size limits the amount of information you can hide. If the image is 10% "dead" bits, then you can only store a maximum of 10% of the image's size worth of data.

The final step is obfuscation, the act of hiding that there is a message to decode. If you store a text message without encryption, it can be easily read. Encryption isn't the only aspect, though. Consider the BMP format described above; in a normal bitmap using this format the alpha bits will be 0x00 since they're unused; there's no reason to set them to anything. If an observer knows this and sees your file has something else in those bits, you've tipped your hand and they know there is something to decode. The best steganography leaves it unclear as to whether a particular file even contains a message; this raises the chances the attacker will waste their time trying to decode a message from a file that has nothing hidden inside. This aspect is very difficult to accomplish, but is almost as important as encryption itself.

The file size problem mentioned above has an effect on obfuscation. If you have to use really large files to hide the desired data, you are tipping your hand because the attacker will wonder why you are sending massive files to the target.

This isn't something you're going to figure out in 10 minutes. The BMP algorithm above is pretty simple and wouldn't take long to implement, but a more complicated format like JPEG is going to be harder.

this kind of attitude isn't going to get you very far... I hope jo0ls doesn't help you with these types of questions. You obviously haven't done a lick of research...

iamlina, you seem to be just asking for help without giving any indication you have read the articles linked to or done any research or started to write any code yourself. Atma has pointed out that we are willing to offer help and advice but only if you show that you have made some effort yourself.

Repeatedly asking jo0ls for help isn't going to make anyone (including jo0ls) do your work for you though.
