Default RS232 on VB.net

I apologise if this has been asked before. I have searched this forum and have not found what I'm looking for.

I have just started using VB.net, and am currently using VB2010 Express. Previously in VB6, I used the MSCOMM control for communicating via the serial port.

It would be much appreciated if someone could answer these questions:

1) What is the minimum development environment required for RS232 communication? I assume VB2010 Express will not be sufficient.

2) What control or class should I use?

3) Is there a tutorial available?

Thanks.

2) You can make use the System.IO.Ports.Serialport.

1) Since the class is part of the .Net Framework I think VB 2010 Express should be sufficient.

3) MSDN provides a brief example.

To supplement 1), you don't even really need Visual Studio. The .NET SDK is free and comes with the compilers for C# and VB .NET. You'd have to pick your own text editor and call the compiler from the command line to develop in this way; it's much more convenient to use VS 2010 Express Edition.

I would bet money 2/3 of .NET questions are already answered in one of these three places.

Thanks Orca.

Thanks AtmaWeapon, is there a difference between VS 2010 and VB 2010 express editions ?
