Angry Why no comport?

My app needs to communicate with an external modem, which is connected to the pc with an USB to Serial adapter. My (standard) modem is on Com4 and functions perfectly when testing with hyperterminal.

If I use the SerialPort.GetPortNames() function it returns COM3 and COM4 (COM3 in use).
When I try to open the port;

sercom = My.Computer.Ports.OpenSerialPort("COM4", 9600, Parity.None, 8, StopBits.One)

the following error occurs;

System.IO.IOException was unhandled
Message=De poort COM4 bestaat niet. (Port COM4 does not excist)

***?
Anyone

Are you sure Hyperterminal isn't running and have the COM port open when VB tries to open the port?

Drivers and hardware for USB-to-Serial adapters are not all created equal. Here is some basic documentation on what to look for (mentions USB-to-serial troubleshooting on first page): http://www.me.umn.edu/courses/me2011...al-port-vb.pdf

Failing that, try a different brand of adapter and/or update the existing driver.
