Talking A Few Database Questions

Hi!

I have Visual Studio .NET 2005 and am working on a program with Visual Basic. Currently, I'm trying to figure out databases and how to store information from the program in a file that the program can always access. Here are the two types I'm looking for:

1. Almost like a diary type thing. I will go into the program, type in a bunch of stuff in a text box, fill in some radio circles, and some check boxes. Then, when I press (FINISH), it will send all of the information to a database, along with the date it was sent. Then, I could do it again (either in minutes or in days) and it would allow the same thing to happen, using a new "line" of the database to store the new information.

In addition to this, I wanted to create a statistics part of the program which would be able to average the values from ALL OF THE Radio Boxes and Check Boxes that have been recorded in the database. Also, be able to have a "history" and have a combo box or something that lets me choose available dates to see what was filled in.

2. Kind of similar, except not with dates and times. I want to basically be able to create a program that will store the information of multiple people, and that information will show up, unless I have not filled in their information through the program in which case it will show up as a blank form. Once this is filled out, the person will then have the information show up when clicked in the program. There would also be an option to "redo" the information which would set the form blank again. I would probably need about 50 people stored in it....

So basically I am looking for two different ways of sending and retrieving data from a database. So I'm unsure what program to use for database (Access, Excel?) and how to send/get the information from it.

Any ideas would be great, thank you!

For the database part, I would not use Excel, since it's not really a database. I would use Access, or SQL Server.

As far as sending data to and getting data from the database, you'll need to use ADO.NET. The System.Data namespace has tools for working with databases. If you're using Access you'll use the System.Data.OleDb namespace and the OleDbConnection, OleDbCommand OleDbDataAdapter and OleDbDataReader classes. For SQL Server you would use the similar classes from the System.Data.SqlClient namespace.

Here is a link to some samples that should get you started in useing the ADO.NET classes: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vbasic/dow...1samples/#data

If you have any questions once you get started feel free to post back with your specific questions, and the code you've got so far, and we can try helping with them as well.
