Question Do I need MS Access installed to use mdb files in my VB NET app?

Hi,

My boss wants me to create local databases on the light-side of things. I was researching on what solutions are available, we discussed the possibility of using text or xml files... but we dropped the idea since we want to use SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE command sets (or the like)

I proposed the idea of using Access files (mdb) but he told me that he doesn't want the user to have Access installed on their computers.

What are the choices avaible, am I forced to install Access on machines that would be using my VB .NET app to access mdb files?

Thanks alot!

You can use MDB files with your app without having Access installed. The .NET framework has database drivers that you can use to connect to a MDB file and read and write data. I've been doing this for years. First with VB6 and now with VB.NET.

Hi 7,

You do not need Access installed to connect to and maniputalte an Access .mdb file.

VB6 with ADO surrported mdb files through 'MS Jet' Drivers. Jet 4.0 was the last version I used.

With VB.NET also supports the same. Under VB.NET 2008 it is the default.

Personally I'd make the connection in code where you have more control rather than with the wizards from the main menu.

If you want to mount your mdb on a company network and allow multiple users to share it you will need to make keep the time your connection is active per install to a minimum. if you follow this method several users can work at the same time without colliding. If you have more than five users I'd look at a MS SQL server.
