Default dbconcurrencyexception - turn off?

Using VB2013 and sqlserver express 2012

I was being all smarty pants and planned out how to save data using a transaction and lastmodified column to make sure nothing had changed in the database between select and update then checking datarow.haserrors to see if any rows failed due to @lastupdate = "lastupdate" then doing a rollback or commit.

I run the code an voila, my fancy stuff never did anything because I get a dbconcurrency exception.

I take it sqlserver automagically checks for concurrency without any of my fancy sqlupdatecommand/parameter hokus pokus? Is there any way to turn it off or go around it so I can figure out which rows failed etc? I couldn't see anything in smss or on google so far.

Or is there some great method using transactions with dbconcurrency exceptions?

Thanks!

Doh! Of course, I search for half an hour and not really find anything, post, search some more and within seconds I get

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms171936.aspx

concurrency exception walkthrough. I'll have to try this out and see if it ends up doing what I was attempting to do (looks like it does).
