Question Help with updater and more

Hi... i'm new to programming and need some help with a small project i have.

This is what i need to do:

1st. Create a file updater that will check if have any new files to update.

2nd. Prevent that a specific file (named main.exe) be executed directly... this file has to be called only by the updater and only after the updater have updated files. (something like LAUNCH active only after update).

I've seen ppl doing this with the help of a dll.
Can someone please explain this to me and how shall i do it?

Thanks in advance!
