Question 2D Animations

I have a large background comprised of an aerial photograph onto which I have drawn numerous lines using GDI+. This composite background is held in an offscreen DC and I then BitBlt a portion to a picture box for display.

This works very well and I have very large images (10000x6000 pixels) scrolling very smoothly.

I now want to have small rectangles (lots of them, maximum 30x5 pixels each) move across this map following the lines I have drawn. (It's a railway simulation).

My question is what is the best scheme to employ for this animation.

I have tried redrawing all the lines on the image and then drawing the rectangles in their new position using GDI+ but this is too slow and produces a jerky scroll.

Is there a way to capture only that part of the image directly under my moving rectangles (these can be orientated at any angle) so I can redraw just that part every time I move the rectangles.

Or is there are better way, that I have completely overlooked?

Thanks in advance,

Naga
