Default spinning reel

Hey all,

I'm trying to make a simple fruit machine game for windows mobile device.

I can create the game easily enough and flip through pictures in a picture box to display the correct symbol.. but what I'd like to do is do a proper spinning reel, but have no idea where to even start.

What I have is a list of images in an imagelist (or individual files) - what I'd like is them attached to each other and moving downwards, preferably as though it were going around a drum but just them moving would be a start.

I'm completely and utterly new to graphics on .net - but i'm comfortable otherwise.

Google searches send me nowhere but to sponsored links about fruit machines.

Thank you very much in advance.

note mods: this is also in interface and graphics, didn't realize there was a games forum.. sorry!

I'm sure theres a better way of doing this..

But to get myself moving, what I did was to put all the symbols into a single image.. a strip of them.. then moved the picturebox up and down with a timer (resetting the position to the top when i reach the bottom) as needed and stop it when it reaches a certain point after a few spins.

timer is set to like 20ms so it whooshes through and does the job.. i then just covered the part of the screen up that wasn't the 'win-line' with a couple of panels.

usually the simplest method is always best, well thats what i discovered, if your happy with it then its fine.
Why not give bitblt or dx8/9 a try

It works.. though I ran into some issues when I wanted a 3 line reel shown - had to use 2 images and move them in tandem so I wouldn't end up with a white space as I looped the image around..

I'd like to try some proper graphics methods, but just have no idea where to even start, never played with graphics in .net - i've been more of an app guy and not a game guy - but would be fun to learn something new

its really quite simple, have a search through the forum, or download the dx7, 8 or 9 sdk from microsoft you get a whole lot of tutorials on either one, my advise is go str8 to dx9 as its the most easiest to learn 7 and 8 can get quite complexe yet restrictive in what you can do

Can I use dx9 on a windows mobile device 6.5??

if not, perhaps someone can help me out a bit more the way i'm already doing it.

I tried using 2 images per reel and flipping them around as needed - it worked, but was ugly as hell and a real pain to stop the reels where they needed to be, so I changed how I did it and put 4 picture boxes per reel

R1_0 R2_0 R3_0
R1_1 R2_1 R3_1
R1_2 R2_2 R3_2
R1_3 R2_3 R3_3

and as only 3 from each line are visible at a time, I'm able to flip the pictures as needed, so when R1_3 gets to the bottom of the viewable area, I move it to where R1_0 is (theres a timer modifying the location of each in turn) and change the picture to the next image on the 'reel'

doing this on the emulator I can make it appear like its a reel rotating - though the timer period is really really short. I also have 1 timer for each reel.

On the emulator it works, when I push it out to my device, it CRAWLS.. I don't know if my device just can't handle that much stuff going on at once or what.. but clearly, its not a workable solution.

I really want to have the images move as though its a spinning reel compared to static picture boxes just cycling through the images.

Any suggestions?

i don't think WinCE supports Dx9 as it is just a compact version of windows i do know the Dreamcast uses WinCE, not sure what API it used though.

I don't think you can get A WinCE version of Dx9 anyway, you'll probably have to use GDI or OpenGL or worse, write your own wrapper, (good luck with that)

Have a search on the web for writing for Dreamcast code theres loads laying around, you can get some great code that you could reverse engineer. Just dont forget to give credit to who helped you.
