Default using an external app to return a value within a web page

note: this is more of a concept thing rather than a question of fixing

the goal:
- have an external file which will generate something and return it to where it was called (a web page)
- use the returned value in a login form
- only those who has that external file installed will be able to complete the login process
- since the trigger is a web page it needs to be cross-browser

some thoughts:
- i can probably do this using ActiveX but given that it will only work IE it will take a lot of twist and turn for the users to have it work on other browsers
- i can also use ssl certificate authentication but it wont generate anything
- was also looking asynchronous pluggable protocol so that it will be cross-browser

are there any other ways i can do this?

Accessing local content from a web browser in that fashion is going to be tricky. Javascript in a web page s generally run in a sandboxed environment with little to no access to local resources. HTML 5 allows this but the files need to be specified by the end user, you cannot just go rummaging around the users system.

ActiveX controls would also have severe limitations imposed and the user might have blocked them anyway so this could be a very limited approach.

What would this concept provide that would improve over existing security mechanisms?

thanks PlausiblyDamp for the insight.

this is for a B2B site where the terminals used are solely for the transactions. if we are to go with this we will require them to install the needed files and by doing this prevents outside use of the site.

we can also go with a USB dongle like what banks do, or go for an OTP generator device but I'd like to try first with a software based solution.

Could you not use a x.509 certificate installed on the terminal to identify and authenticate the user / terminal?

This would require you to generate the certificates and for them to be installed on the terminal but it wouldn't require custom software or similar being deployed.
