Question .NET Framework Initialization Error...

Hey all,

This is my first post on this forum. I have found numerous answers on this site and am thankful to all those who provide help. I am very new to VB.NET and am working on a project that is now causing some serious grief...

I am using the new VB 2005 Express Edition (beta 2) for development. The project is essentially a CD with various programs on it. I have developed a program in VB 2005 that runs when the CD is inserted into the computer via autorun.inf. The program acts as a "launchpad" for the applications. It is simply a graphical way to install the programs that are on the disc rather than having to browse the disc or use the RUN command.

The program works flawless on all machines that I have installed VB 2005 Express Edition onto. When the program is run on a machine without VB 2005 I get this error:

.NET Framework Initialization Error
To run this application, you must first install one of the following versions of the .Net Framework:
v2.0.50515
Contact your application publisher for instructions about obtaining the appropriate version of the .Net Framework.

Ok... I know that most machines these days are running .NET Framework v1.1. I also know that the VB 2005 installer also installs .NET Framework v2.0 (beta).

I was under the impression that the Framework was backward compatible and the application should work on older versions of the framework so long as they do not make use of the newer features.

This application is very simple and to the best of my knowledge only uses the .NET framework for accessing the filesystem.

Is there a way of making my application backward compatible? Or do I have no other choice than to install .NET framework on all machines that this disc is inserted into?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is my understanding that they are forward compatable, not backward compatible. For example a 1.1 program will work in 2.0, not the other way around.

In order to use a .NET program from the CD, the machine would have to have the Framework already installed.

In addition, I wouldn't go so far as to say that the majority of computers have 1.1 on them. I agree it's starting to get bigger, but by no means would I say the majority of users have it yet.

Also, since VB2005, and the 2.0 version of the Framework are still in Beta, you've agreed that you won't distribute any applications with them. It is available solely for you to test with. Please double check the License Aagreement you accepted when you installed the tools.
