Question .Net Installation

Ok I am getting kind of an error message when trying to install .Net 2003.

Step 1 is saying Visual Studio .Net Prerequisites

Setup has detected that some of the system components that are installed on your computer do not match the versions required for Visual Basic .Net. You must install a different version of these componets.

Is this talking about service packs? Currently I am usng Service Pack 2 for XP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Default Those darn .Net pre-requisites (got to love 'em..)

Unfortunately Visual Studio .Net installations are rather complex so it is hard to know exactly what might be happening with your machine.

There should be a file called "moreinfo.htm" located on one of your install disks that documents the pre-requisites (I think it's under "/help/" sub-folder for the CD version or "/WCU/help/" if you've got a DVD version).

Somethings that can also need updating:
1.) Internet explorer (and/or associated service packs)
2.) The MSI (installer) itself
3.) The .Net framework (each Visual Stduio.net version is "sync-ed" with it's .Net framework counterpart and "remnants" of old frameworks hanging around just confuse the installers).

Hopefully you haven't ever tried to install one of the .Net beta versions.
This can really mess things up (including registry settings).

Well unfortunately I can only find 1 CD so far. A buddy of mine installed it on my old machine and recently rebult my machine and moved into a new house, so in that time frame I must've lost the other disc. Any way to get a replacement copy of the other CD or not?

1.) How do I go about updating the MSI installer?
2.) Also, how do I update the .Net Framework?
3.) Updating the Internet Explorer I assume is a matter of going to Microsoft and searching for the update.

Do you think I need the prerequisites CD to continue installation?

I have a funny feeling I am screwed without that other CD.

Any other help would be greatly appreciated.

These are the prerequisites as per the moreinfo.htm file on the disk:
Quote:
2. Required Prerequisite Components

* Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or later
* Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Web Extensions Client
* Setup Runtime Files
* Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
* Microsoft Data Access Components 2.7 Service Pack 1 (Windows 2000 only)
* Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1

Note: For languages other than English, the language pack for your operating system locale, Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 <locale> Language Pack, is also required. For example, Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Japanese Language Pack.

* Microsoft Visual J# .NET Redistributable Package 1.1

Note: For languages other than English, the language pack for your operating system locale, Microsoft Visual J# .NET Redistributable 1.1 <locale> Language Pack, is also required. For example, Microsoft Visual J# .NET Redistributable 1.1 Japanese Language Pack.

Microsoft Visual J# .NET Redistributable Package is not required for Visual Basic .NET, Visual C# .NET, or Visual C++ .NET.
As you can see, there is one gray area which I don't think you can get without the disk and that would be the "setup runtime files". The rest you can get pretty easily, but it seems that you are going to need that disk for that.

Yeah I figured I would need that **** disc. Is there a possibility someone could zip those setup runtime files and email them to me or some other mode of transportation? Not sure exactly how large those files would be if they were zipped.

I just literally tore apart the computer area with no luck in that disc. So it seems as thought I am pretty screwed at the moment.

It would be illegal for any of us to do that. As long as you have a vaild serial number, Microsoft will replace damaged or missing Cds for the cost of shipping (probably $5-10). Please contact them for a replacement.

Thanks, I'll give them a call. I didn't realize they'll replace missing/lost disc.

Thanks again.
