Question .NET 2.0 Framework Question

I have been packaging the .NET 2.0 redistributable with my apps and was a bit confused about 2.0 SP1. Does SP1 replace the redistributable or do I need to first install the redistributable and then apply SP1? The MSDN site doesn't make this obvious (at least not to me).

I believe that 2.0 SP1 is actually installed as part of installing the .NET Framework 3.5, but I'm not sure if there's a redistributable what installs 2.0 SP1.

So, I should be packaging the 3.5 redistributable? I sure hope not. Going from a 29 MB redistributable to a bloated 202 MB does not go well with offering downloadable apps. Many of my customers are still on dial-up.

Even packaging 2.0 redistributable and 2.0 SP1 gets things quite bloated.

Why do you feel like you need 2.0 SP1? I was led to believe that it was actually some very small changes to the behavior of a few small classes.

This time of year I am writing new versions of my apps. Part of that process is making sure that I am packaging the latest versions of everything else.

SP1 does have a pretty long list of fixes, several pertaining to memory issues. They also fixed the problem you pointed out about the String.IsNullOrEmpty function.

Hmmm, it does seem to be something desirable, but the date on the MSDN download for the redistributable doesn't seem to indicate it comes with the SP1 installed. It looks to me like you have to install 2.0, then run the 2.0 SP1 installer.

If that is the case, MS sure doesn't make life any easier.

At some point I may have to dump .NET and go with something else as I need to offer downloadable apps. Not everyone is on a high speed connection.
