Default .Net Runtimes

Hi,

I've written a program in VB using Visual Studio 2005.

The code compiles prefectly and I can turn it into a .exe file. When I run the code on my laptop it runs perfectly. When I run it on another machine it fails. It seems the other machine does not have the .net runtime environment installed on it.

Instead of installing the .net runtime environment on the other machine can I get a vb compiler that compiles the code and will run successfully without needing the .net runtime environment ?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

No. There is a lot more to the .net framework then a few additional code libraries.

Either install the framework or rewrite your program in a different language such as vb6.

Geo68, I've moved your thread over to the .NET side of the forum. Have a look at this: Frequently Asked .Net Installation/Documentation Questions

Never versions of the the framework (namely 4.0) has the option only to link to parts of the framework, making the installer package noticeably smaller. If you're using any previous versions you're out of luck.

Would I hit the same problem if I wrote the program in C++ or C#?

C# / VB both depend on the .NET Framework runtime. C/C++ on the other hand compiles directly to native computer code and thus you won't have to install any runtime / redistributable. If you use any extensions / libraries not native to your target machine, however, you will be forced to ship these with your application.

C++ can go either way. It can be used with or without the .NET runtime. If you use C++ without targeting the .NET runtime, then you won't need it installed to run your program.
