Default Real Pickle with Published Program

I do not know what I have done to mess this up but...

I wrote a program last year, published to a website I own. I allow certain users to have the address of the setup.exe for the installation. I have around 10 users with the software installed. When my users run the program on their pc, it looks for an update and asks them if they want to install the update and then the program runs. I have not made changes for around 6 months. I recently made a change and published the update. I had trouble compiling and I don't remember the error but it had something to do with signing certificates. I clicked the Create Test Certificate and it compiled and published ok. Now when I run the program as it was installed last year, it looks for an update from my site, sees a problem and tells me the program cannot be started, contact application vendor. If I open details, it says "The deployment identity does not match the suscription".

I really do not know what to do now. Microsoft has been no help at all.

I cannot have them uninstall and install a new version, there are dozens of settings and names and email addresses and I am afraid all would have to be reentered. I think I have found the old .pfx file that is expired. I have many backups of the source code over the last year and only 1 of the backup directorys had the original pfx file??? I ran a program called renewcert.cpp changed the original pfx file to a new expiration date and republished but nothing changed, I still cannot update an older installation.

Thanks.
