Question Application object vs data manipulation in memory

Hello community!

I'm new to the Forum and also to visual basic. I hope I can learn and share information with all of you. (I'm not a native English speaker, so I apologize in advance).

I have an optimization question. I need to improve a program that executes a kinda difficult calculation. The data it uses is located in an excel file, so the entire application uses the excel application object (workbook, worksheets, range, etc) to achieve this.

The runtime is awfully slow (the amount of data to process is huge). I've been reading a few documents about improving the performance of the application object; but I still think that taking the data I need to do the calculation and load it to a data structure in memory could be faster. And I can always save the results to an excel file, can't I?

What do you guys think? I do believe that data manipulation in memory is better, but I'm not an expert in Visual Basic or Excel.

Thank you all for your answers.
