What do the titles under the usernames mean?
Like "Novice" and "Guru"?
I couldn't find the answer... or is this a secret?

It's a system of names/ranks based on the number of posts you make.

0 - 24 = novice
25 - 49 = member
50 - 99 = journeyman
100 - 199 = expert
200 - 399 = guru
400 - 1046 = exhalted one
1047+ = grand master

We are currently discussing alternative titles so as to do away with the "quality" implications of a particular rank....ie. you could be a seasoned professional but with only 20 posts, you are still a Novice. Or you could ask tons of questions, have a low knowledge of VB, and still get to "guru".

Dont you think 1047 is a bit of an odd number to change between Exhalted One and Grand Master?

maybe he's just raising the bar to fit needs. Or he doesn't want certain people to get grand master ;)

Ok I just can't pass this up. Am I or anyone else going to get to 1046 posts and just say to ourselves **** so close but I just can not make that last post to roll over to Grand Master

I think just the fact that the level is over 1000 will prevent most of from attaining that level and that certainly is not aimed at any one individual. I know what you posted was tongue-in-cheek, but I couldn't let it slide.

My mistake, it's not 1047 but 1045 where you become GM.

As for why? I think it has to do with me actually.

As some of you may remember, this forum used to be run under Perl before the Webmaster changed to PHP. During the transition period, we were posting in both forums more or less at the same time.

Somehow, I crossed the 400 post boundary to EO without triggering the rank change. The webmaster thinks that something about the double forums messed me up. Anyway, as I understand it, the rank changes only when you hit the rollover number. It doesn't check after that. So I was essentially stuck at GURU since there were no ranks after EO. I didn't realize this at the time and just thought that the rank would change later. I got over 1000 posts before I thought that it was too weird and posted a question to the Webmaster. He looked into it and decided to add a new level that would trigger when I hit it. Since I had already passed 800 posts (the next logical level) and 1000 posts, he made it 1045.
