knowledge share

i would like to build or get a programm for knowledge share, the type of programm where every user would be able to access any information, any documents @ any time.

i presently work in a plant where they build elevator cylinders so there's a lot of questions can't be answered by every one.

here's a few examples : what type of glue are we using for this job, what are the instructions for assembly, got math formula for pressure, need an expedition sheet where can i find one.....

using this kind of tools make sure that you always get the latest information (no old sheet in binders...) and you don't run around the plant to find a simple information.

if anyone ever saw this kind of tool let e know

Short of a network (a LAN, or most likely in your case a WAN) you could use LapLink.
LapLink allows a user to transfer files from one computer to another through it's software.

i would like something where everybody on the net work could do a search for an information or a document and simplet get what he needs. if he finds something that's not in the system then he could enter it for further use. i'm not quite sure if i explain this ok....?

So you're on a network already?
If so, just set up a file server that everyone has read/limited write access to.
A user could then only search all the files on the network if they have the network drive mapped on their machine.

I'd probably set up an Intranet kind of web page. I'm not sure of all the details, but that way, any computer in your plant that has access to IE and your network could just bring up your web page and do some kind of search.

That way you don't have to worry about files being shared, having multiple copies of the same file(s) (and thus, not being sure if a file is the most recent), and it would be an interface that most people are familiar with.

i was more thinking about a search engine as well i don't want to create thousands of documents, sometimes it's only for math formulas or defenitions ...

Sounds like you need a forum like this with a search function.

I think therefore I am... sometimes right. images/icons/wink.gif

Use a database on a server.
Each client (employee) could access the database, using your application, and search for little snippets in it.

You can find it at your nearest Microsoft Retailer. $10,000 usd for a 25
user license.

It is actually only $5k for a standard edition processor license which allows unlimited usersand full text indexing.

And I also think a database is the best method. I have seen examples (all custom) of what you are asking for, and they are all networked databases. Usually with a SQL Server (or equivalent) back-end.

my company is small but with a lot of documentation and ISO is getting more and more important, i realy wont have time to build it so i'll try to find one and buy it

You can use a plain-old Access database, but you will have to code the
text search stuff. Actually, SQL can do the search fine, it is deciding
what text needs to be cataloged and indexed.

How are you currently storing this info? In Word or Text docs? If you are using these then it would be a relatively simple matter to give everyone access to them using a front end with a backend db. Let me know I think I have a ready built ( with slight mods) solution. PM me on this one.
