BillSoo 09-11-2001, 09:39 AM This is really off topic....but when events like this happen, it halts the normal course of events everywhere.
I really want to extend my deepest condolences to our American members and especially to all those who lost loved ones in this recent tragedy.
I am shocked and horrified by the brutality of the act of terrorism. I hope that justice will be served.
Sincerely,
Bill Soo

orufet 09-11-2001, 05:09 PM I used to live in Atlanta, Georgia, and I consider myself extremely lucky not to be directly involved in this in any way. I do have close friends that may (or may not, we're not sure yet) have lost family. I debated not going to school today, but that would break federal law (more so than you would think.) This event has been so tragic, and I regret to say that it seems to be just the beginning. Bush has sworn that he will "hunt down and punish those responsibe", which, in the worst case senerio, could result in enourmous tragedy that would make this mornings event look like peanuts. I hope dearly that this will be over soon. I have seen recordings numerous times, and can't bare to watch CNN anymore....

Timbo 09-11-2001, 11:44 PM at risk of sounding crass, I had been wondering how old Nostadamus was going to come good with his hithertoo pinpoint(ish) predictions.. but all that's sorted out now though.
This should serve as a reminder (should we survive) to all societies everywhere, that concepts of invulnerability, invincibility and other such pride based assumptions are just as bad now as they were for the Roman empire when the barabrians overran their capital..

I too wish to express my deepest condolances.
Hopefully the United States and the President will be able to react and act in dignity.

Garrett Sever 09-12-2001, 06:57 AM I hate to instigate a flame war, but <font color=blue>Timbo</font color=blue>: Now is not the time for throwing stones. I don't expect you as an Aussie to have as much invested emotionally in this situation as we Americans do, but kicking us when we're down and calling us arrogant is not the way to win friends, esp. those of us that are passionate.
I'll remember you.

anhmytran 09-12-2001, 09:42 AM Thank you all.
We are all people in the same roof and the same prayer.
Regardless of religion, we are in the same belief.
Terrorists have their own belief, and prayer.
I am sorry I think that they pray their prayer, too.

All things in their time and place. This, was NOT a good time...
All:
I fully expect this to be my last (although first, also) post on this topic. Two quotes:

Rather than the intended (I think) reaction of fear and terror, the United States as a nation is now ****ED OFF!!!!!! After the due mourning process, WE WILL DESTROY YOU, whoever is responsible and those that will give aid to them! It is great to have the support of many other nations, but do not think we will change our tactics in this WAR based on external public reactions until our fellow countrymen have been avenged and the future safety and sovereignty of this great nation has been assured for our sons and daughters.

Timbo 09-12-2001, 06:32 PM Oops, to all who I offended with my earlier post (not least the honorable Hand), I apologise - there will be no flames. I was making a generic observation of history and hindsight without the aid of stones or pointy fingers.
I in no way disregard the death of 1, much less 10,000 innocent people.
For the record, I am a US citizen. I am also a UK citizen and have many times heard the explosions and seen the terrible aftermath of terrorist bombings in my European motherland.

orufet 09-12-2001, 06:50 PM What angers me the most (aside from the murder of all of the innocent people) is that Palistiniens (sp?) are CELEBRATING the fact that the US was hit and so many people were killed. It's just discusting to think that the death of thousands of people makes some happy. This whole things seems like it's from a novel or a movie. It's just horrible

Garrett Sever 09-12-2001, 07:47 PM Timbo,
I apologize if I misunderstood your previous post. I think everyone is a little emotionally raw, and I'll be the first to admit that I'm not thinking entirely rationally at this point.

Robby 09-12-2001, 08:11 PM On Monday evening I installed a new scanner, it caused a power-surge and fried my new motherboard and I lost all the data on my hard-disk. When I woke-up Tuesday, it just did not seam to matter.
My point is that within the bigger picture, our trivial little problems don't and shouldn't even matter. My tears are with everyone in the free world.
I don't know about you guys, but I have not been able to write a single line of code since this discusting act was committed.(on my lap-top)
God bless us all.
I don’t like signed posts, why? We are so used to them that we ignore the last line of the post.
basdewaard 09-12-2001, 09:07 PM As an Aussie, I want to say that myself and many of the people around me *DO* feel and *ARE* emotionally attached to what has happened. Human death is horrible no matter what the distance.
I believe this is not only an American issue. This was an attack against the world. Let us all unite.
<font color=blue> :: grin-r :: </font color=blue>
anhmytran 09-14-2001, 12:34 PM Yes. It is.
This is the attack against the Human race.
I hope many will see clearer how bad the war is.

n6jah 09-15-2001, 11:51 PM I can hardly explain the emotions I felt Tuesday morning as I watched the second plane crash into the World Trade Center. Disblief at first, with incredible grief and anger as the day passed.
I was born and raised here in Southern California, and have not felt any particular connection to New York until Tuesday morning. Now, I feel as though my family has been attacked.
Thank you Bill Soo and to all who offer condolences to us here in the USA. It shows that we are all neighbors and family.
I will leave you with one of my favorite passages... one that most of us have heard parts of here and there. I was reminded of it while reading the posts in this thread.
"...no man is an island, entire of itself;
every man is a piece of the continent,
a part of the main. If a clod be washed
away by the sea, Europe is the less, as
well as if a promontory were, as well as
if a manor of thy friend's or of thine
own were: any man's death diminishes me,
for I am involved in mankind, and
therefore never send to know for whom the
bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
John Donne (1572-1631)

Rhoarke 09-17-2001, 11:45 AM I agree with the comment abount not having been able to write useable code this week. There's something unique about being a coder- you have to be so tuned in to your own head that a disruption like this seizes your consciousness and won't allow (me anyways) the necessary concentration. Either this eases up or I get fired...
My comment here is that I saw an interesting report this weekend that was talking about our unity. It was suggested that at the time of WWI and WWII, the United States was just too young to be emotionally attached to her cities. Pearl Harbor was not avenged because of the place, it was avenged because of the act. This attack on the States has for the first time begun to expose a genuine attachment to PLACE. We have the City of Angels, the City of Lights, the Windy City, and lots of other nicknamed cities that are becoming an age-cured part of our country as a whole. I am not suggesting in any way a disjointedness in past history- we just haven't been old enough to be attached to cities, buildings, and landmarks as much as other places in the world that are many many hundreds of years old- if not thousands. That has changed. We are attached to our cities now, and everything in them. The WTC towers were relatively new (1972 & 1974) but they were part of NEW YORK CITY, and we are demonstrating a nationwide attachment to the city. An attachment that has no basis on familiarity. People who have never even been there now speak of the city with great admiration and emotional attachment. Since when...really, now... did the average L.A. pedestrian give a rat's a** about New York?? Think about it. Now, people in Seattle, LA, St.Louis, New Orleans, Dallas, Phoenix, Atlanta, Miami, and all over are CRYING for New York and Washington. Amazing to me. America is growing up. These are growing pains. I am anxious for the ancient but immature countries to feel our intelligently deliberate response to this atrocity. We are showing how much we have grown as a nation and how our lengthening history will begin to supplement our patriotism in the determination and absouluteness with which we defend our people, our country, our government, and our cities... even if we've never been there.
-Brett
