Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Hi there,

I was wondering whether we could discuss the advantages and distantages of Windows XP as a programming platform. I am looking to install Windows XP Professional on my system and I first thought I should ask a few users and see their opinion.

Will programming be simplified on a Windows XP operating system? Will my applications automatically adopt the new window styles, or will my applications have to make various API calls “design” my windows? However, also looking at Windows XP as a general user operating system, does it have any advantages over the previous versions of windows i.e Windows 2000/ME, 98?

I am looking forward to formatting my machine completing, and installing Microsoft Windows XP Professional. However, I do not need to worry about hardware requirements as my machine is as follows:

DELL Dimension 8100
Pentium 4 1700MHz - 256K Cache
512MB RAM
40GB Hard Disk
nVidia GeForce 3 (64MB On-Board Memory)
Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI

I hope we can have a quality discussion on Windows XP from a developer’s perspective. Thanks.

Well, XP is not all that different from Windows 2000. It's very secure and reliable, not to mention very stable. From a programming point of view, nothing has changed, at least not on the outside. I'm sure the internal scheme of things has been chopped up and put back together. The windows do take on the XP style, however the controls do not. If you'll search the forum, I have posted a method of making the program adopt the XP style.

From an OS point of view, I love it. Everything is quite nice, and I like the new interface. Everything upgraded very smoothly from Windows 2000 Pro (remember, you can't upgrade from 98 -> XP Pro) and it only took about an hour on my old Celeron 667.

So basically, XP is an all around good operating system from all angles, with some strong points, and not-so-strong points.

Good luck, VD!

Volte, does XP come with the .NET framework pre-installed?

I don't think so....

well, what advatanges does it offer from the programming point of view. I mean does it contain new APIs, other features for VB, etc?

Well, since it's still the same version of VB, no there are no new VB features. I'm sure there are some new undocumented features, but I wouldn't know what they were.

Hi All,

Yesterday I installed Windows XP Professional Edition, and hey it looks awsome. I have installed Office XP Premium that also looks outstanding. I found it a bit annoying that my new windows took on the design of the new XP windows but the controls are the same – WHY? Now my applications look weird. They have lovely “XP” window, but the controls look odd on the forms. I wish I could turn all the buttons extra into the new “XP” ones. Any ides?

Thanks,
VD
