I saw this a long time ago and was never able to figure it out. I came across it again the other day so I figured I'd post it here to see if anyone else knows how it works.

How can area not equal area?

Click here (http://research.microsoft.com/~philtorr/Work/Images/Triangle.gif) to see the picture.

man this is a good one.... hummm need a few minutes on this one!

The "slope?" of the red and green triangles do not have the same angle, if you look closely you can see it's not a straight line from green -> red, red -> green

Laurent
12-12-2001, 11:48 AM
got it!

if you draw a strait line between the top right and the bottom left you will see that ion the top figure there's a free space under the line and on the bottom one there's no free space and the line will cut the triangle so all that part that you cut off is the same surface as a free cell.

is this clear enough

Man, you guys are good!

Just cuz I consider myself a bit of a math kinda guy, I decided to confirm what Arnout said mathematically.

The slope of the red triangle (the rise over the run) is 3/8, or 0.375.
The slope of the green triangle is 2/5, or 0.4, so this is indeed where the disparity comes from.

One interesting thing to note then is that the slope of the large "triangle" is 5/13, or 0.385, somewhere in between, as we'd expect.

Furthermore, the areas of the sections look like this:
Yellow Section = 7 units
Light Green Section = 8 units
Green Triangle = 5 units
Red Triangle = 12 units
Total = 32 units

If area of the big "triangle" would be 13*5/2 = 32.5 if it were in fact a triangle.

Thanks guys, that one's bothered me for a while but somehow the fact that each triangular section must have the same slope in order for the whole thing to be a triangle never hit me.

OK, maybe this will give you a headache:
If a train, carrying 12 gallons of ice cream, leaves Chicago at 10:00AM, and the freezer stops working, how fast would it have to travel to get to New York before half of the ice cream melts, at a rate of 1 half gallon every 30 minutes? (a carton is one half gallon)

Banjo

How far is it between Chicago and NY?

500 miles according to maps.com (http://www.maps.com)

What's the matter with 500 miles. Do you want it in kilometers or something?

500 miles = 804.672 kilometers

I'll see if I can explain it... CW = Clockwise and CCW = counter-clockwise.

Go right to the purple > and green > and back to the left again. Up through green > and blue > and red < and back and up and around CCW past the red door to green > and purple < (Don't hit red arrow yet).

Back up to green < then CW past red door and down past purple door through purple > then up past purple door past blue door CW around outside and down...

Then right and up to blue < and down and back toward blue door to red > and back CW through green > and purple > and up past green door to exit.

I agree with Banjo on this one. I found the minotaur and the blinky games fairly taxing for a while, but ultimately possible, but the sliding door problem has got me totally dumbfounded. Any hints?

I think Binky level 4 is impossible. how did you do it?

Squirm

Yes and yes.

Level 3
Left 1, Down 1, Up 1, Right 2, Down 1, Left 1, Down 2, Left 1, Right 2, Up 2, Left 1, Up 1, Right 4, Up 1, Right 3, Down 3, Left 1, Right 1, Up 3, Left 1, Down 3, Right 1, Down 1, Up 3, Left 2, Up 1, Left 1, Down 3, Left 1, Down 1.

GREEN = Involves picking up green item

Okay, I finally figured out Level 6.

Squirm
12-14-2001, 01:44 PM
Level 6 - This is as far as I got, there always seems to be a block left by the left of the board that I cannot use, and therefore cannot finish the level. This is what I have so far:

Left 1, Up 6, Down 1, Right 1, Up 1, Left 1, Down 5, Right 2, Up 5, Down 4, Left 1, Right 1, Up 3, Left 2, Down 3, Right 1, Down 1, Left 2, Down 1, Left 1, Up 6, Down 1, Right 4, Up 2, Left 1, Right 1, Up 2, Left 2, Down 3, Right 1, Down 1, Left 4, Down 1, Left 1, Up 6, Down 1, Right 6, Up 4, Left 1, Down 3, Right 1, Down 1, Left 7, Down 1, Left 1, Up 6, Down 1, Left 1, Up 1, Right 1, Down 3, Left 1, Up 1, Left 1, Up 2, Down 1, Right 2, Down 4, Left 1, Up 2, Right 1, Up 2, Left 2, Down 1, Right 2, Down 1, Right 1, Up 2

Then from there I can easily pick up the 2 green pieces, but to pick up the third, I cannot do it without being killed. Any help Mill?

Mill
12-14-2001, 01:50 PM
Without putting the entire solution down, I used the blocks on the right to shield (from left to right) columns 3, 5, 7, 9, 10 and 11.

Now the tricky part is the blocks on the left.

Push the second one from the bottom to the left.

Next, get under the bottom one and push it up one.

Now, get under the one on the far left and push it all the way up. After that, it's pretty trivial.

You can now use all of the blocks on the left.

Squirm
12-14-2001, 01:56 PM
Right, that one detail you mentioned about pushing the block up is what I was missing, thanks man images/icons/smile.gif. Other than that, the others were all easy, only 6 caused me any degree of trouble. I am still having problems with the sliding door problem, after following your solution I got to a point where you said go CW through a specifc place, but a door was in the way. I tried it again and still no luck. Oh well, not to worry.

where you have 3 next to you at the start push the 2 side ones down and push the middle one to the left, eat the green bits and then push the one on the right up and accross to block the black thing
