Hello Everyone,

Could a few more members please beta test Nuke2000's app (see "Tell me what you all think") and give their opinions to him? It doesn't take long to download and I can personally vouch for it.

It really is essential when members are developing applications that they get as many opinions, good or bad, as possible. That's how we all become better programmers.

The good members of this forum have always supported each other well in the past and Nuke is looking for that support now.

how do we know that you are not the same persom, logging in under a different name in order to trick us?

I thought the same thing at first. But then I remembered about the "titles" under each person's name (ie Novice, Journeyman, Member...). Sparkey is a Member, and it takes quite a few posts to get that high. Unless I have the steps wrong. Member could be the very first level, but I think Novice comes before that. And Journeyman after.

I think so anyways.

Hi Shirley,

How about saving me some time...can you post the link to the code you are promoting? I don't have too much free time but I'll make an effort in this case. /images/icons/smile.gif

Thanks.

Well farkwit, the short answer to a question like that is that you don't. However, I would expect some degree of common sense to prevail.

The members of this forum are all here for the same reason, to learn and to help others whenever they can. It will be a very sad day indeed when we cannot trust the very people we look to for help and advice.

If you feel that way then by all means do not download his app. I just hope that when the day comes that you yourself are looking for the same support from this forum that you find it.

Hi Valkyrie,

Thanks. I'm not actually 'promoting' the code!! I posted this because I think the author of it is getting a bit of a raw deal from some of the members of this forum.

The app is is a ship and building editor for Star Trek Armada and is in beta stage, and is a demo. He has not completed it yet. It's from Nuke2000 and I think it's his rather unfortunate choice of screen name that is putting members off. It's just a screen name. Nothing more.

Anyway, it's his very first app and all he is looking for is some feedback, opinions, constructive criticism, ideas for improvement etc.

I downloaded and ran it. I uninstalled it too. You can see my reply in the original post "Tell me what you all think".

Your opinion, however, would be very much valued and I'm sure he would certainly appreciate the support. The link is http://www.nuke2000.f2s.com/Nuke2000.exe

OK...Like I said I don't have a lot of time (although some might argue otherwise) but I'll try to look at it tonight.

Thanks for the link.

Hi Kwalude,

Thanks for the support, I appreciate it. I'm not certain of the order of hierarchy either, but I know that it's Novice, Member, Journeyman, Expert and then I think it's Guru.

Well done you for spotting that!! Actually, I think I've just been promoted to Journeyman!!!

Hello Valkyrie

I am sorry to say but i don't now who you are. i have been a member for about 2 - 3 months. and i have ask for help in the past and always got it. I just like to say thank you to Sparkey. I have thanked him a lot these past few day. And i now me name is i bit bad but i can't nuke ppl.

Some one told me " It takes ONE line of code to destroy a computer but 1000's of lines of code to make a master-piece." I am not saying my program is a master-piece but i like to think i can get there. And for me to get there i need people to tell me what they think.

Yes it's big 5.5 mb but only because if i have the pic on the hd it is better and faster for the program rather haveing it in one exe file. Well that it for me i would like to get more ppl talking about the program rather then ppl bad talking me and Sparkey and i like to say sorry to Sparkey for getting it to this

Well I know who Valkyrie is, and so do a lot of the members. He is very well respected for his coding skill, his sound advice and his good sense of humour.

Uhm....actually Nuke, I'm a she, not a he. My name is Shirley. Not to worry, you never asked and I never offered the info!! It wasn't necessary to know my name for me to trust you and give you some member support anyway!

How is your version with k/board shortcuts coming on?

OK Nuke-ster...here's my opinion.

Install package looks great...didn't add the actual Nuke2000.exe shortcut to my start bar.
<pre>1. Intro Move...very cool! Add some music or other sound effects at the start
up. I diddled with my volume control and then go blasted out of my seat
when the voice came on!
2. About button didn't do anything visible?
3. Editor
Not all items appear to be in alphabetical order.
Where is the "SAVE" or "OK" or "DONE" button?
Make form fixed in size. User can resize it but your items don't
resize.
Lose the "wow" factor by having so many combo boxes on the screen.
Suggest having the "spots" be clickable, then a combo box appears.
Could use "tooltips" to give info on each spot?
4. Uninstall
I got a message box saying "Nuke2000.exe is write protected"?
It did not actually remove it!!
</pre>

It looks like a fun project and should be very cool when complete. It looks like you have put a lot of time into your intro.

I hope this helps you and good luck. BTW what country are you in?

P.S....Congrat's on your promotion Shirley! /images/icons/smile.gif

I have thought of some things to but in the Intro Move and a Skip Move botton. I have already removed the About Botton. The Items are not in alphabetical order does it look better that why ? i have not add the "SAVE" or "OK" or "DONE" button yet still working on that. for the form resize i fixed it already.

For the combo boxes i was thinking of there way of doing it. But i have 1/2 of the program doen. I will be makeing upgrades to make it look better. I am adding a popup menu when the user right clicks with the mouse. It will have tips and help info.

about the Nuke2000.exe is write protected i don't now what when wrong there i have to look in to that.

i am form the Georgia in the US. I was not born in Georgia.

And thank you for takeing the time to d/l and look at my program.

For more info on my program go here www.go.to/nuke2000

Hi Valkyrie,

Looking at your reply to the Nukester, you picked up on quite a few things I missed...like I didn't have my speakers on at the intro....LOL

There were a few others, although I spotted the missing program menu link and the uninstall problems. Nuke will also have to sort out the registry entry it leaves behind after uninstall, but apart from that you gave him really good advice. Thanks.

This is why it needs more than one person to beta test an app, because different people look for, and at, different things. It would be helpful if others would take the time to look at it too.

I hope we've been of some help.

Hi Nuke,

I wish more people had tested it for you, but at least you got a couple of opinions.

Good luck with your finals. I know you'll be concentrating on them now, so we will look forward to the update of your app in the near future.

First, i would like to thanks to all the people that have been great, giving me great tips and ideas. This is the place i was looking for, because i'm a beginner programmer, and most of all, i don't have many peoples to talk about the things i'm doing. I am downloading the app right now but, i'm thinking if it is not a kind a virus or something, i don't know if i'm getting paranoic, but the best(and the worst) way to fool people is asking for his good faith. Somebody has tested it? It's clean?

ripley

Sparkey
09-06-2000, 11:28 PM
No-one is trying to fool anyone, honestly. Two people have tested it. I was one of them. It is clean, I can assure you. The author is a genuine programmer looking for nothing more than some feedback on his app. He values the opinions of the members of this forum. His rather unfortunate choice of screen name (the filename is called after him!) put some rather paranoid people off. I can assure you that it is just a screen name, nothing more.

When we are developing apps, it is vital that we get constructive criticism from others. That's how we become better programmers. That's all he's asking for. There is nothing wrong with his file, but if you have any hesitation then please do not download it. It isn't compulsory.

If you do beta test it for him then I'm sure that he will appreciate you taking the time to look at his very first app as much as he will appreciate your comments and opinions.

Regards

You just answered you own question. If you can't download the flash player then you are outta luck. If you run you install program it should install the appropriate files though, which should get you around that problem.

and the run-time file i can add the to the install program also so ppl don't have to d/l that also.

Valkyrie

Is what I meant is to run your install program on your machine at school. That should, I emphasize should, put the proper ancillary files on your machine there so that you can edit/run your program there.

Your install program creator should include all the necessary files but if not you can id which ones are missing by installing it on a bare machine, and then noting all the complaints you get when you try to run your exe.

Just tell the user in readme file or on your site that Flash is required and offer a link to macromedia's site.
That way you do not have to mess with anything.

Sounds like you need a test-box, dude! :) The registry entry should be something you could check yourself- depending on what the entry is. If you have packaged you app to correctly handle shared files, then you could uninstall the program from your own system and check the status of those registry entries on your own box. Seems better than having us DL updated 6M versions just to check registry entries....something you could test. I DO think all of this input is cool, tho, and I'm happy to see the collaborative spirit. I'm POTS, unfortunately, tho, so I can't DL the file yet...but DSL is coming!!! (always a week away...RIGHT.)

I've found a couple of things so far. Send me your email addy (my email addy is on my ICQ info)and I'll email you my findings.
