I am having the WORST day!!
At work, I'm the only programmer and I just graduated from a 2yr program last May -- mainly studying the AS400 as that's what they offered for the computer programming area then. I have a VB 6.0 application that uses an MS Access 97 database. Our network at work uses Novell -- not sure which version. Our office does a LOT of data manipulation using FoxPro, dBase, Access, Mail Manager, etc.
There are two computers equipped with VB and Access, one is an XP machine (used only by me) and one is a 98 machine that is used heavily for the data manipulation. I've discovered that when I compile on the XP machine, it doesn't setup and run right on other versions of Windows. So I've been compiling on the 98 machine.
The only files that I've manually added in the Packaging and Deployment wizard are the dao350.dll, the readme file and the database. When looking at the files included, they're pretty much all dll's that are needed for data access. Also, I upgraded the 98 machine to MDAC 2.5.
The only thing that I've done with the network is to copy files to the network to transfer to a different computer's harddrive (between the XP and 98) and the setup files created by the wizard and I installed the application on a separate laptop running 2000 off the network.
This morning, Novell acted weird on the 98 machine, but I got logged in ok at the end and compiled the application. All of a sudden this afternoon, the 98 machine won't run Mail Manager anymore and the computer next to it won't either. The other machine has had problems for several weeks now. I haven't done any installing or testing of the application on anything connected to the network but the laptop for the last two weeks. I have done some work on the 98 machine and the XP machine in code.
My boss's wife was screaming about it this afternoon (my office is in the basement at the front of the bldg. and she was upstairs in the back and I heard her every word), everyone says that it is my application/me that caused the problem, and there's a meeting on Monday morning at which we're going to discuss the "anomaly" and figure out why my application is causing this problem. Basically, they're going to ask me why this is happening and how I'm going to fix it. First, I'm not sure that it's my application or VB that caused it. Second, if it is, I don't know why! or how to fix it.
So, is there anyone out there who can answer me regarding the possibilities of my application and/or VB causing problems with these programs and the network? And, if you have any scenarios in which this is the case, if you know what had to be done to fix the problem?
Thank you for any help you can give me.
