Absolutely. I believe that you can get it free with MS' Learning VB book, so it can be a very good deal. If you get it separately then it is still a lot cheaper than Pro.

what is rgeat about microsoft is that they want you to learn to use their stuff so if you are a student (with student proof like a card) you can purchase the professionnal edition for about 1/8 of the normal selling price. here in montreal canada it was something like 800-900 and i paid it 120. so if ever you want more to do in vb you can buy it later with not too much cost

In early 1997 I bought the complete Visual Studio 5 for £100, which is around $125 US on a student licience (in the terms it says Im not supposed to sell anything I make with it, but no chance of that anyway ;) ). Okay, Studio 6 is now the norm, and .NET is on the way, but as a learning tool, with VC++, VB, InterDev, VJ++, and VFoxPro, its great. I dont know if MS still release the whole studio to students so cheaply, you might want to check out their site.

Or you make friends with someone in the evil empire and buy on their employee discount ;)

I have several friends that work for MS. They won't let me use their discount. :(
