Running out of resources!

I'm working on a program that communicates with a cash register (it's a POS system). Due to the fact that the registers are pretty old and have proprietary commands, I have to communicate by passing commands to a DOS based program. What I do is make a text file of commands I want done, then shell the DOS program with the filename in the command string. The DOS program then does the job and outputs data in DBF files (I said it was old!).

The problem is that on some systems (NOT mine of course), the program crashes with a resource error. Since it leaves the DOS program partially loaded, it requires a reboot to clear the memory.

So my question is: Does anybody know of any way to monitor resources? I'd like to find out what is causing this error.

Also, do you have any good links to a site with info on reducing the size of your program? If I can't overcome this communication problem, I may have to shrink my program to free up more resources.

The Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Programmers Guide has a section that gives specifics on reducing the size and resources for your program. You may find some help there. Biggest thing I found to keep the resource use low is to ensure you are unloading items that are not in use. Remember, anytime you make a reference to an object (Set myVariable = anyControl), it is loaded and using resources.

Hope that helps
