Ales Zigon 01-17-2002, 11:11 AM Hi there!
I got a problem with my WinME. Sometimes my icons om the desktop/taskbar became mixed up (like: icon for Outlook changes from "Envelope" to whatever it pleases and so on). The only way I can change it back again is by hand (refresh or restart doesn't help).
Also sometimes "Tooltip text" of the taskbar isn't shown in the front but in the back of it (it is allmost unvisible).
I've checked for viruses and came up with nothing.
Many times I can tell when it's going to happen (desktop blinks just like someone or something has refreshed it.
Any idea?
P.S.: I really don't want to reinstall OS if not necesery!
Robby 01-17-2002, 11:28 AM I used ME for only a few months but yes I did have that problem.
If I remember correctly, the icons were shortcuts to network
items that were not able to display properly while I was off line.
Similar problems here too. Mine seem to be related to shortcuts from "My Computer" Mostly the CD shortcuts. I've learned to live with it.:)
reboot 01-17-2002, 11:40 AM Get TweakUI from Microsoft. It has a Repair Icons. Not a fix, but it's better than having to do it by hand. This isn't just a ME problem either, I've seen it happen in other Windows. It may be an Active Desktop thing, but I'm not at all sure about that.
Ales Zigon 01-17-2002, 11:41 AM Oh, I see. So it's WinME bug or something.
I got kinda used to it too, but it's somehow funny to look on the desktop and recognize nothing.
Actually, my friend advised me to switch to W2k, but I'm not sure about it. I tried them once but had problems with modem and graphics card. Also don't know if the App developed with 2k will propperly work on 98 (never tried).
What do you think? Is it worth to switch?
Thinker 01-17-2002, 11:45 AM I have never had this problem with ME, but it could very well have
to do with Active Desktop, as I have always considered it one
giant bug and never use it.
reboot 01-17-2002, 11:47 AM We develop all our apps on 2k, and they always work fine on 98. Games and graphics cards and etc. can be another story though. :)
Robby 01-17-2002, 11:53 AM I've been on 2k for almost 2 yrs, I never shutdown and never have to reboot.
In all that time I've had one blue screen and that was because I
had my TV tuner on while I did something stupid ( can't remember now)
I develop for any Win version and it works fine.
You will see a huge difference in memory management with 2k as
apposed to 98 or ME. ( even 95.. cough..cough).
For each device you have installed on your PC, go online to the
respective manufacturer and DL the latest drivers for 2k. Also
make sure that your bios is up to date as well.

This could be a problem, because my AGP graphic card died some two months ago, so I'm currently running on Cirrus 5446 PCI and S3 Trio64V+PCI(765). I think there's NO driver update on the net. My BIOS is Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG (I've heard something about updating BIOS but don't even have a clue how to do it!)
How about it?

For the BIOS, at the download page they will have step by step instructions on how to do it.
As far as any other devices go, each one MUST be 2k compatible.
Ales Zigon 01-17-2002, 12:28 PM Thanx! I'll look into it. About my graphics... they're rather old (both of them have just 2M RAM). How can I tell if they're 2k compatibile? As far as I know, there are NO new drivers out there.
Can I tell just by looking into some properties or something?
Robby 01-17-2002, 12:31 PM Goto BIOS UPDATE (http://www.abios.com/) , you will find what you need.
Follow their instructions very carefuly.
Robby 01-17-2002, 12:33 PM If you know the company that made the video card, check-out their website. you need to have the model number on hand.
Ales Zigon 01-17-2002, 12:52 PM Thanx again. I think I'll go for it right now. If every thing goes to plan, I'll see you in couple of hours! Cheers! (Wish me luck)
Robby 01-17-2002, 12:57 PM I really hope we see you in a couple of hours. If not I may feel
resposible for the troubles you might have. (since I encouraged
you to change OS).
GOOD LUCK, and be careful with the BIOS thing.
reboot 01-17-2002, 01:17 PM Surely you don't mind flying to Slovenia to fix it for him should he muck it up? :p

Yeah...I reserved the plane tickets already.
But seriously, I think I set-out enough warnings though.
Ales Zigon 01-17-2002, 04:07 PM Do not fear! Zigona is HERE!
Hi guys! Well, what do you know - I'm back and running on 2k!
:D Had some problems with modem but as you can see...
Thanx again Robby and everyone who helped me.
:)
reboot 01-17-2002, 04:09 PM If you're used to 9x, you're REALLY going to like 2k. A lot.
Ales Zigon 01-17-2002, 04:20 PM Yeah! I like it allready. It will just take some time to get used to the keyboard layout. I mean everything is changed. Darn, i can't find the "monkey sighn" (you know-for email!), y=z and z=y, etc.
But I must say: excelent! And good too.
:D
Robby 01-17-2002, 08:18 PM zigona, glad to here you're up and running.
I'm sure you will love it.
