Timbo 05-12-2004, 05:59 AM Senior Leadership members occasionally ask to retire because they have commitments elsewhere and cannot volunteer the time necessary to be an effective Mod/Admin for a significant period. I did this at one point in the past. Understandably, this close-knit group of members develop lasting friendships over time.
Also, the contibutions of retired Mods/Admins are recognised by appointing them the title of 'Retired Moderator'. This special user-group continues to be privy to discussions amongst the Leadership but they are no longer allocated a vote on official decisions, despite the fact that their opinions continue to be valued. No Leadership member can single-handedly appoint a badge to another member, this action requires a majority vote between the senior Leadership.
If a 'Retired Mod' once more finds the time for their role here, they will likely have it returned to them when a position becomes vacant.
Orbity chose to retire but was reborn as John! :) FlyGuy retired recently as did Squirm, but they still pop in for a few posts now and again; the allure of this forum remains irresistable :D
XL-Dennis 05-12-2004, 06:20 AM Could also regular member, but without any official commitment to the board, also obtain the status "Retired" ?
Not with the way things currently stand.
In order for someone to be given a retired title they need to have retired from some type of duty. This duty is almost always moderating or administrating duties, but there are one or two retired Leaders.

I indeed retired, but for moderating and administration duties, becuase of a lack of time.
Almost every day I pop in to see how things are going and answers those questions which are to a special interest to me or to have a look at questions which are unanswered for a longer time.
Also, just for simplicity's sake, there is no "Retired Administrator" title. Although Flyguy, Squirm, and Thinker all retired from administrator positions, their title is "Retired Moderator." Retired mods' usernames show up in green, although they do not have the {M} badge that active moderators have.
reboot 05-12-2004, 09:31 AM There's very little difference between a Mod and an Admin here, so there's no point in having two different retirement categories.
Also note, the 'Retired Leader' category is just honorary, unlike a Retired Mod, who will still have some of their former privileges.
As far as a regular user being 'retired', retired from what?
It might also be worth it to point out that if you have 1600+ posts and decide that you don't want to come back here for some reason you can change your custom title to "Retired whateveryouwant" if that makes you happy.
AtmaWeapon 05-12-2004, 03:00 PM Do retired members get a 10% discount on the chicken strips meal? :D
XL-Dennis 05-12-2004, 03:05 PM Thanks John - Only about 800 post to go before I can add "Retired XL:er" ;)

What, you're giving up Excel? ;)
XL-Dennis 05-13-2004, 07:03 AM What, you're giving up Excel?
Yes, on this board and at several other boards as well :)
Only +700 post left to do here :D
MikeJ 05-13-2004, 03:08 PM Hmm... I just wonder what might happen if Microsoft developed an operating system called XL... It would be Office XL: Excel XL. :D :D
Also, on the custom title note, you can elect not to have a title by simply leaving it at the default (Ultimate Contributor), or just change it to something like Senior Contributor if you don't want the title.
