Way to locate an internal modem and send commands?

I'm working on a project via VB.net and I've ran into a slight hitch. I can't seem to figure out a way to locate the internal modem, then send an ATA command for a certain duration, then send an ATH and exit the program.

What should I do to find the com port/IRQ and what would work for sending certain commands?
