Recently having purchased an iPod, and not having WinXP or Win2000, I couldn't install iTunes. At the moment, I am using a friends computer (THANK YOU John!) to transfer music.
Does anyone out there know of a program that will allow me to transfer / rip music on WinMe? (That is, without having to format the iPod.)

First of all I would just like to say I feel sorry for you since you are running Windows ME. I think the iPod can act as a harddrive so you could store the music on there. I have no idea how to play other music on it unless you use a ripper to convert into AAC. On TechTV they had a program that could do that. Might want to search there. I'll tell you if I remember the name of it.

I've checked out the iPod as a hard drive, and I have no idea how it stores the MP3s on there. It seems almost random. Maybe an older version of windows iTunes... Or a new PC...

Options to ponder:
1) Depending on your system you could probably install XP if you are running ME; If I remember there isn't too large of a jump as far as hardware requirements
2) Linux has a number of apps to transfer music to your Ipod. This might be a good last resort solution.
3) New computer that can run XP
4) XPLAY for Windows iPod Users (p/n 6810-XPLA)
XPlay enables users of Windows Me, 98SE, 2000 and XP to use an Apple iPod
5) Look on google for alternatives im sure there is a way
6) Music Match Juke Box can do it with the right plug ins; This was the way windows users had to do it before Itunes
With all this being said Itunes is the sh*t and is by far the best way to transfer music to an Ipod.
