Dennis DVR 06-02-2004, 10:16 PM The Random Thoughts seems to be quiete now a days so i decided to start a new thread so members and badges member may have something to answer.
here's the Q
How would you rate the badges member of this Forum from 1 to 10 and why?
A
Well I will rate them as 9
Why
first
I admire them for their knowledge in every aspect of Visual Basic And VB.Net
second
simply becuase they are really nice and approachable they will entertain you in any possible way they can
geeee!!!!! i'm one of them isn't it bias to rate us as 9 :D well not i'm excluded in the rating question i'm the starter of this thread remember :chuckle:
I would say about 7, havn't seen much badge members in the .net forums, so i don't know alot of them, respect for iceplug tho, he is a maniac post machine :D
ElderKnight 06-04-2004, 02:28 PM I like 'em all, 'cept for the grouchy guy.
:-\ Just kidding, they're ALL good.
reboot 06-04-2004, 02:31 PM  I'm not THAT bad am I? :chuckle:
Wamphyri 06-04-2004, 02:58 PM reboot, I don't believe ElderKnight was talking about you. He would have said the OLD grouchy guy if he was talking about you! ;)
[runs and hides]
MikeJ 06-04-2004, 03:06 PM Then again, reboot did respond to that. :chuckle: He's young at heart. Anyways, I'd rate us at about a 6 on the MikeJ scale - but it starts at 2 and only goes to 6 (and increases in increments of -.5.)
:p
darkforcesjedi 06-04-2004, 04:54 PM If it increases in -.5 increments, then 6 is the lowest it gets...
MikeJ 06-04-2004, 04:55 PM I know. Shh! :chuckle:
MKoslof 06-05-2004, 08:56 AM I would say about 7, havn't seen much badge members in the .net forums, so i don't know alot of them,
Are you sure about that :)? As a brief example the .Net Database, File I/O and Office Automation sections have TONS of posts by the badged members of this board..I'd say the final solution to most problems in these sub forums where aided by the badged members in some way.
Actually in terms of total posts (between legacy and .Net) I'd say the badged members posting frequency is HIGHER overall in the .Net sub Forums (sure these sub Forums are new and contain much less traffic but still...).
Maybe take a closer look at all the .Net forums we have.....:p
I'd say overall we rate as a 8.5 :)
Deadalus 06-05-2004, 10:51 AM I think behind the answers in this thread is a perverse way of looking at the forum, as if badged members would have some kind of obligation to help you or deliver quality answers.
A forum like this only works because it lets all members help eachother. The badges are just a way for the moderators to show their appreciation for somebody's extra skill and/or efforts to maintain the quality of this site over a longer period of time. They do this not because of any badge but because they want to, just like the thousands of others that take the time to share their knowledge here.
MKoslof 06-05-2004, 11:28 AM I completely agree with you :). However, I took the thread-starter's reasoning a little bit different.
Any community or organization is a mass of everyone's insight, experience and effort. Any successfull operation values each member and what they have to offer.
But with this "structure" comes the need for leadership. Leadership leads to more responsibility and the internal desire to help others..if not, the person would not have been given the chance.
I believe the of point of this thread was the ask the community as whole (since everyone should be valued in the same manner) how they feel the badged members and leadership help run the forum. I live by the rule that you respect everyone because every unique person brings their own character, experiences, and insight to the table.
And, if you have been given a leadership role, you are expected to do what you can, when you can to assist others. I think saying that a badged member has no more responsibility to this forum then anyone else isn't fair :). Admins and moderators do SO MUCH to run this forum..and they got this level of responsibility because they showed interested, patience, vast knowledge and most importantly, the willingness to dedicate their time to this forum.
If the forum leadership feels you are worthy of a badge, it should be your internal, personal goal to help in any way you can. If you have dedicated your free time to assisting other members and running this forum, you received a badge for this reason.
A person's compentency has nothing to do with the number of posts they have made, or even if they are a badged member. And there is no obligation to help anyone here :). However, we do it because we want to :). And if we can do other things to be more accessible and provide more support to members, everyone has a right to express their option.
That's how I took this thread :).
excaliber 06-05-2004, 09:23 PM I would give them a 9 out of 10. Not a ten merely for the fact that I have yet to obtain a badge :)
All in all, they have been an incredible help, and are why this forum is so great.
Timbo 06-06-2004, 03:59 AM Can't.... quite... reeeach..... ghahhhh!...
Can someone else give me a pat on the back please? :D
Perhaps we should start a thread for forum discussions? Y'know, where we can discuss forums and stuff. :p
Agent707 06-10-2004, 09:24 AM I won't give an overall rating. But...
Overall, "helper" badged members are very "helpful" and generally easy to communicate with. - 9 (some are 10's, some are 8's)
Knowledge of Badge members. - 10 Nuff said there.
Here's where the score will be low. Although I do agree with having "strict" posting guidelines, the Mods are sometimes too aggressive in "deleting posts".
I think there are several mods here that have no sense of humor. A lot of time I post a message that has any humor to it, it gets deleted... no matter if it is in a "General" thread or even "Random Thoughts"... It's like, just because my sense of humor doesn't align with theirs, it gets deleted...
So I give Mods a 4. And it is only a 4 because they do infact do a good job keeping the boards "policed"… just over-policed sometimes. Otherwise I'd rate even lower.
Lighten Up Mods!
My favorite badged member is:
Iceplug – Here is one VERY nice, helpful, knowledgeable person.
There are a LOT of people here of this caliber, I just wanted to give a medal out. :D
If there was "one thing" I would like to see changed on this forum, that would be people to put their ego's in a box and bury it…
I cringe on the EGO's people have here(no, not everyone… not pointing any fingers… you know who you are :))… What do you think it accomplishes flexing your ego? Do you really think other people really Care how intellectual you think you are?
Some of you here are Very humble and I tip my hat off to you. :D Don't loose that attribute, it's a gem!
If there was one thing I would like to see remain as is… is THIS BOARD REMAIN as long as there is Visual Basic! Even though it's being trolled by you "mean nasty mods with no humor!" ;), it's still the best Forum on the Internet.
Good job to all who make this forum possible!
reboot 06-10-2004, 09:44 AM re: Deadalus. The badges are also a way for regular members to have some clue as to whose advice is likely the best advice when there is sometimes no other reasonable way to discern that.
re: Agent707. I appreciate your comments. It may not be completely obvious yet, but there is a concerted effort going on right now to 'tone down' some of the over moderation here. We're still working out the bugs. :)
Agent707 06-10-2004, 11:46 AM Maybe you could give out "Hey, avoid listening to this idiot!" badges too... I'd be a candidate for that once in a while. :p I'm trying though. :D
re: reboot - You fall under this statement from above "There are a LOT of people here of this caliber". Though that is a really silly Avatar you have... ;)
Deadalus 06-10-2004, 12:07 PM Maybe you could give out "Hey, avoid listening to this idiot!" badges too... I'd be a candidate for that once in a while. :p I'm trying though. :D
If we would have these badges, don't you think it would be funnier if the bearers couldn't see them? ;)
reboot 06-10-2004, 12:35 PM Ooohhh... I like that idea <evil grin>
ElderKnight 06-10-2004, 12:35 PM If we would have these badges, don't you think it would be funnier if the bearers couldn't see them? ;)
The electronic equivalent of the "KICK ME" sign on ones back?
Agent707 06-10-2004, 01:18 PM If we would have these badges, don't you think it would be funnier if the bearers couldn't see them? ;)
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA..........
Agent707 06-10-2004, 01:20 PM Ooohhh... I like that idea <evil grin>
