when declaring a variable at the top of the code window, which is the better way as they both do the same thing.

Dim something as var
Private something as var

Well, you might want to go for Private as you clearly know that that makes the variable only available in the current object (and Private clearly shows that it's not in a procedure of some sort) but, AFAIK, either is fine.
I tend to avoid using Dim unless I'm in a subroutine/function, since the scope doesn't seem as clear as Private/Public. :)
