Ales Zigon 01-31-2002, 06:20 PM Hi!
Don't know if it is just me, but I get really confused when reading the post/question without any dots/commas in it. Like i have a problem in my code i have build a program that reads the data from the com port and places it into the somesort of a database when i click this button i have on my form i want it to calulate whatever from it and substract the lowest number from the avarage of them all is there a way to do this thanks in advance if someone knows how to do this please answer this question because i need it verry fast allso i need to know how to connect to my database if i write my sql string like this select firstname from secondtable where firstname like john it just do not work where seems to be the problem cheers
Isn't this annoying? Wouldn't be there a way to check the post text to see if there is at least one dot/comma in the sentence with 100 words or something?
I could read post like this over and over again, but won't get much out of it.
What do you think?
Volte 01-31-2002, 06:29 PM well, I can't see that happening, but I think it should be a set rule that proper puntuation should be followed. Like, this equally wouldn't be good:someone help me.................................................................... ........................... my database......................... it.............. crashed! ....................... help!!!!!!!!11111111111111111111111111111111 or something like that. I think users that don't follow proper grammar should have their posts edited the first few times with a PM sent to them, and subsequent times, have their posts deleted.
dcl3500 01-31-2002, 06:38 PM Please guys! We have people from all over the world in here. Not everybody knows all the punctuation rules in the English language (myself included). I don't think it would be fair to censure people for their lack of understanding of this. After all, people come here for programming help. If they want help with their english they can go to a "Help with English as a Second language.com"
Volte 01-31-2002, 06:40 PM I withdrawl my statement. ;) I wasn't even thinking about people from other cultures! Ooops... :o :o
I do wholeheartedly agree, although there are some spots where it is so obvious that they are just lazy. Like, they have perfect grammar and spelling (apart from the occasional 'u' and 'ur' and 'oic'), just no punctuation or anything, but of course, you are totally right...
Ales Zigon 01-31-2002, 06:53 PM I agree 100%. My English also isn't perfect, but I'm sure that if nothing else, I'd put dot or comma now and then just to let me review my question more clearly (also short sentences are much easier to write or understand).
ChiefRedBull 02-01-2002, 02:56 AM I've noticed this as well.... its hard not to. The one thing that annoys me is people who aren't willing to put in a little effort into phrasing their question, so as to help us to help them the best we can. Abbreviations like "c" and "u" and "ur" - YARGHHH. They just get to me...... heh.
I agree though, people from other cultures should be respected because they're at least learning english, rather than expecting us to learn hebru..
Still - it might be appropriate every now and then with a particularly poor poster. A little hint perhaps?
divil 02-01-2002, 03:02 AM There is a difference between other cultures learning english and script kiddies who *do* speak english as their first language, speaking newbie-speak and not bothering to format their questions. Its their loss however, because some people (me included) don't bother reading a question if its not easy to do so.
One of the first things people are taught about the english languages is the concept of sentences and paragraphs.
Squirm 02-01-2002, 04:02 AM Why do people always post the obvious, like titling their posts 'VB Question' or 'I need help' or something... as if somehow, all the others here are people who do NOT need help or are NOT asking VB questions
heh, I guess I'm just picky...... :p
And I often don't bother to read threads with posts like 'URGENT!' or 'Need help QUICK!' those people should have come here earlier than night before their project deadline... :)
divil 02-01-2002, 04:57 AM Thats a very good point squirm. The title of a post should be the question, in brief, I reckon.
Personally I just skim over the main General VB forum, and if there are any thread titles that capture my interest I will take a look.
reboot 02-01-2002, 08:11 AM Lack of knowledge of the English language still doesn't excuse some of this stuff. i.e.
PlZZZZ HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and etc.
ya know?
Robby 02-01-2002, 11:52 PM I understand that for a lot of people English is not their first
language, but when you write a half page with not a single
punctuation mark. Boy, it's hard to understand.
Squirm 02-02-2002, 04:10 AM Yes, regarding poorly titled posts, I did quite a childish rant in this thread (http://www.visualbasicforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11468) a while back. :)
Kyle1234 02-05-2002, 07:31 PM i cant stand it either and i also cant stand run on sentences and non-capitilization and ppl who dnt use mny vwls 'cause they thnk it looks kool.
^ Combonation of everything i hate in one paragraph, a TRUE work of art!
