You know how when you open a file (such as an exe or jpg or anything really) in notepad, and without changing a thing do a 'Save As'. Then when you try and open the new file with it's associated viewer you get an error msg saying that the flie is corrupt or not a valid file type.
This happens no matter what encoding you choose to save it with.
This even happens in the latest versions of DOS edit, although with older versions it didn't.
What is the problem? And how can you to get round it?

Those files are binary, notepad and edit are text editors. You don't get around it with them. Get a hex editor.
