Best Button Control & Must Have stuff?

I'm updating an ancient VB3 application. Well.. I'm doing a total re-write on an ancient VB3 application and it's time to bring it into the 21st century. It's a fairly simple stand-alone data entry application.

Can anyone point me towards the best button control out there (free or at least reasonable would be nice)

Are there any other must-have's out there? One thing I just HATE is doing reports. I've tried Crystal Reports but... shudder... I find it to be rather complex. Any handy report tools out there?

What else? Mmmm... a decent toolbar perhaps?

Any other help/suggestions most welcomed.

Thanks for your time.

Button control - http://elitevb.com/content/01,0044,01/
Toolbar control - check out VB's Coolbar in MSDN.
Reports - Crystal Reports is the best AFAIK, but that question is more suited for the Database section of this site. :)

For a decent toolbar, check out vbAccelerator's:

Thanks for the replies!

Pikzel: Have you managed to get the coolbar to actually work? I downloaded it and I think I got all the various and sundry .dll files but when I run the demo application I get

Error 429 - Activex component can't create object
on this line: Set m_cMenu = New cPopupMenu

I tried another program from vbacellerator and had a similar experience.

Has anyone had any experience with the SM Button Activex? It's fairly cheap at $49 and seems to make a nice button. Just so long as it doesn't crash my app too much. :)

Thanks again for the replies!

You have to compile cPopupMenu dll and of course register dependancies...

It runs just fine on my machine.

Many of the downloads on the vbAccelerator site have dependencies, please check the References section for the necessary dlls you need to add references for.

There's a request in to add MouseDown and MouseUp events to the control:
http://www.vbaccelerator.com/home/VB/Code/Controls/Toolbar/vbAccelerator_ToolBar_and_CoolMenu_Control/bugTrak1272-3.asp

I'm hoping if enough people decided to download it, some more work will be done to fulfill this request, but who knows. Mr. McMahon may be working on doing VB.Net conversions and may never get around to it...

Ok I finally got the demo program to run!! Woohoo!

Did you know you have to use regsrv32 to register .dll files as well as .ocx files? Unlike the .ocx files, if a Dll isn't registered the program loads just fine but just doesn't run. Learn something new every day.

Anyway now that I've seen the toolbar control from vbaccellerator and all I can say is OMG is it complex! There must be 500 lines of code just to get your buttons to display. No thanks! I'm way too stupid for something like that. I'll leave that kind of thing to you rocket scientists.

I need a simple XP style menu and a simple XP style toolbar.

I found a $35 menu activex with a 21 day trial which makes really nice XP style menu's with little icons and nice blended colors. Is it cool to post web links? I know it's a commercial product but it's really decent.

Now on to toolbars...

I've seen some graphical interface designers for toolbars but they are either $399 or only work for vb.net or are horribly complex.

Any ideas on a brain dead simple activex control that works as a good toolbar?

Thanks for the tips! I'll check those out right away.

I'm looking for controls to write a really nice Office 2003 or XP style application. My criteria are that the control must be an Activex. It must be small. It must be as bug free as possible and it must be cheap.

Here's what I've found so far if anyone's interested.

XP STyle Menu's www.xpstyle-menu.com $34.95
- Just drop this thing on your form and instantly your menus have XP style. Spend a few minutes and add some icons. (They don't tell you this anywhere but you right click on the Activex on your form then click on Properties to bring up the editor).

SM Button Activex www.station-media.com $49.00
- Set the Style to Office 2003 and the Button looks cool.

Toolbar - Still looking but now I've got a few more leads!

Thanks gang! Thanks Flyguy!

Hey Shawn! Thanks for the tips. I've found lots of Office 2000 and even Office XP toolbars. I was looking for an Office 2003 toolbar. I found only one package at Planet Source that didn't look toooooo bad and it was free. I'm still looking for the "perfect" solution.

Thanks very much for the tip though!
