using fonts?

hello
i have a ttf file in my app directory, and i want to know how i could load it from vb from its current location. id rather not use it from the windows\fonts directory, and so im hoping that either theres a way to register it with windows so that the program recognizes it, or to just load it directly into vb and use it for all the different controls.

any ideas on how i can use the ttf file directly? or must i install it into windows (tho i know for a fact that ive played games that dont install fonts into windows and use them from the program directory)? if so, how would i go about registering the file with windows?
