webbone 10-18-2004, 10:58 PM My favorite number is 5,872,565.
Why? The answer lies at the US Patent and Trademark Office (http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/srchnum.htm).
What's your favorite number and why? :D
SteRobson 10-19-2004, 12:37 AM What's your favorite number and why? :D
Mine is 2.2360679775 - it's roughly the square root of five. I like it because we were made to determine it without using the square root button on a calculator at school about 10 years ago. It took about 2 hours of trial and error so the whole lot stuck in my head
Vadon 10-19-2004, 03:04 AM For me I like two.
23, it's my gambling number, anytime I want 23 to show in Vegas, it does.
1,362 I dunno why I like this number, but I never forget it.
Rockoon 10-19-2004, 03:20 AM 867-5309
because its Jenny's number.
Flyguy 10-19-2004, 06:15 AM 14
1. Day of birth
2. The shirt number of the famous dutch soccer player Johan Cruijff (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johan_Cruijff) (English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johan_Cruijff))
Ales Zigon 10-19-2004, 06:24 AM 0

00100b 10-19-2004, 06:25 AM 4 (guess why ;))
Second favorite is 42 (because it is the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything)
ElderKnight 10-19-2004, 06:40 AM I rather like Avogadro's Number, the number of atoms on a gram-atom of any element. I drop this one as an outeageously big number, e.g., "The odds against success are aproximately 6.02 x 10^23 to one, Captain."
When I need a smaller number to make a point, I'll use 3.14159.
alt_255 10-19-2004, 06:57 AM 00100b, that is very appropriate!! And might I ask why 42 is the answer??
Personally mine is 13, it appears everywhere in my life (I was born at 1313, left the hospital and went to house number 13 on my street. and more) Either that, or Planck's Constant (6.626^-34), coz I love physics, and think Planck was a genius.
00100b 10-19-2004, 07:04 AM 00100b, that is very appropriate!! And might I ask why 42 is the answer??
Read the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and the subsequent books by Douglas Adams. ;)

AFterlife 10-19-2004, 07:40 AM I like 3 and 9.
9 is just a magical number. Not to mention its also similar to the German word nein which means no. Its my favorite response when someone asks me a question. :chuckle:
Three feet in a yard.
Iceplug, I'm sorry to hear of your dog's amputation. :(
;)
rick_deacha 10-19-2004, 08:06 AM 28,

Klodo 10-19-2004, 09:02 AM 9,

And also I just like it.
noi_max 10-19-2004, 12:29 PM 242

been a fan for quite a few years now...
Klodo 10-19-2004, 01:08 PM The old husband of one the best friends of my mother was in that group (Front 242). Didn't knew it was this popular.

MikeJ 10-19-2004, 08:29 PM 50 is a good number. ;)
My personal favorite (at the moment is 1 1 1 - that's three 1's) because that's what we scored at our hugebigmarchingbandextravanganzafestival today, thereby sending us to the Area competition for the first time ever. :)
My other favorite is 724 (look through my profile and try to guess why)
Mine is 170. I won't say why it's my favorite but some people might already know.
And MikeJ your favorite number is 724 becuase you were born on July the 24th right?
alp0001 10-19-2004, 08:48 PM ∞ Because it is both big and small. :)

Cool!
Too bad they don't come over to my side of the world to perform too often...
I read a Keyboard Magazine article about the group back in '89 which prompted me to buy one of their records.

ElderKnight 10-21-2004, 07:08 AM I do like to take "13" if given a choice, knowing that others who avoid it will marvel at my courage (or deplore my recklessness).

KermitDFrog 10-22-2004, 12:54 PM my favorite number is either the Sqr(2) or Pi, because there irrational, like me.
Also the Sqr(Infinity) because its Infinity, and thats cool, i can be all like "dude, you think your smart- well, whats the Square Root of infinity? Hmm?" and there all like "uh... 4? " and im like, "No! hah! My uber-smartness pwn's you, Its infinity! haaaaaah!"
and stuff...

RoofRabbit 10-22-2004, 02:17 PM Mine is 37 which is just a combo of 3 and 7.
Rashka 10-22-2004, 03:01 PM 2
My first name begins with B, second letter of the alphabet.
Or 7, the month I was born, or 11, the day.
I also like -419, can anyone guess why?

Hah. Just mentioning multiplication gets *some* people all confused.

tomc2506 10-23-2004, 08:12 AM In the dictionary it says nothing about a number being base10 :). Couldn't 'Tom' be a number too, just in base256, there's a thought for you :).

MikeJ 10-23-2004, 12:47 PM My favorite was my Algebra II teacher last year who kept insisting that the square root of 1000 was 100... (For those of you who don't know it's 10sqr(10))

Euler delivered some powerful stuff in such a small equation!
For those not familiar, see here (http://www.well.com/user/davidu/euler.html)
Mathimagics 10-27-2004, 06:11 AM The equation is particularly satisfying because it neatly combines the 5 fundamental mathematical constants: 0, 1, e, i and pi (when written as 1 + e^i.pi = 0)
Tristan 10-27-2004, 09:42 PM I like 1337. Obvious reasons.
And I'm not one of the new 12 year olds that like it. I've played CS since beta six and it's just something that has caught on with me. I still laugh when I see it in "real life."

Yes - truly wonderful. And also amusing in an odd way... the mathemeticians cut the e off their dessert and still wanted to keep it in the family so to speak. :chuckle:
Agent707 10-28-2004, 01:57 PM 7
Oh....
7
Did I say 7?
Is it 7, or 7?

;)
Vadon 10-28-2004, 04:01 PM I like the number 666 as well, It was actually my locker number for a while...
silver_shot 10-28-2004, 08:05 PM This is great to read through and see all your answers. I simple have to say the number 3 or pi. 3 because it's not even and it can't be devided by anything but itself and 1. Also because I always say 3rd time lucky and it has always come true. I look forward to reading more replys lol
Silver
Rashka 10-28-2004, 09:02 PM 3 / 2 = 1.5
Did you mean divided evenly?
justagirl 10-29-2004, 08:17 AM My favorite number would have to be 9, because The Fellowship of the Ring had nine members: Frodo, Sam, Pippin, Merry, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli and Gandalf. :)
Linux_Chic 11-11-2004, 06:51 PM Favourite Numbers?! How can you have a favourite?
Hmmm- I'm a big fan of 42 - amongst ye geeks it must be obvious as to why...
I've always liked 9- it's so nifty- evenly odd, plus K-9 (from Dr Who)
7 because it's the opposite of 9. It's odd. and that's all. (And NOT lucky...)
89 rolls off the tongue so nicely- well put to use for exaggeration accounts (i.e. "This is the 89 BILLIONTH time he's called me today!")
2. what other number can be more useful than 2? 2 + 2 = 5. (and not only for extremely large values of 2.- Ignorance is Strength.) There are 10 kinds of people in this world.... those you understand binary and those who don't.
Following along that topic....10. 1010 is 10.
and of course....57006, which is the number of dead people that can read hex besides you. ^_^ Picking a favourite? Can't be done.

Picking a favourite? Can't be done.
Well, as the originator of this thread, picking a favorite CAN be done.
Ok, that is speaking for myself, maybe you DO have a problem picking one :chuckle:
I'll stick with mine though - 5872565 - and the reason why can still be found HERE (http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=/netahtml/srchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=5872565.WKU.&OS=PN/5872565&RS=PN/5872565) - just see the first post in this thread! :D
Quantumfusion 11-12-2004, 08:13 AM About euler formula , whats i ? square root of -1 ??
About my favourite num , it would be 0 . WHy ? lol it can make all equations become impossible to solve
for example
4x + 7 = xxx + x^2
Mutiply 0 by both side
0=0
no solution lol
Mathimagics 11-12-2004, 10:55 AM i is indeed the symbol for Sqrt(-1)

but if i read through all these posts , i saw noone with 6...
I'm unique! (just like everybody else)
waynespangler 11-13-2004, 12:09 PM I like pi. There is no end to it. It does not repeate.

Linux_Chic 11-19-2004, 10:28 AM Llife-Deficient or Life-Challanged?
I certainly hope not, although I know the feeling.... ^_^
Look at the question again... the number of *dead* people who can read *hex* besides you. Think about it... 57006.....
Rockoon 11-19-2004, 10:47 AM I like 1337. Obvious reasons.

You think this number started with CS?
(3)1337 has been used for at least 25 years beginning with the whole "krad" speak phase that hackers and phreakers were using.. In short, 1337 has been in use since the very first computer based telecommunications counter-culture began to socialize.
tomc2506 11-19-2004, 11:42 AM 57006 in hex is 'DEAE', don't you mean 57005?
forgedsteel 11-22-2004, 02:47 AM I can't hide from the fact that the number 1 is intrinsically linked to me. I am the 1st son of the 1st son of a 1st son, I was born on the 1st in the 11th month, the first four digits of my date of birth are 1111. If you do that neumerology thing of adding the numbers in your date of birth, mine it works its way down to 1 as does the number of letters in my name.
Linux_Chic 11-22-2004, 10:27 AM Dead people *plus* you....

Actually, a lot of numbers match that.. .... ... infinity of them to be exact. Every irrational number has no end and does not repeat. sqrt(2), sqrt(3), sqrt(5)... Every prime number works
dwayner79 12-29-2004, 06:23 AM I wonder how many PINs are listed here ;)
My favorite would be 7 or 40. Both play huge roles in Biblical literature.
elnerdo 12-29-2004, 06:29 PM If you're talking bible, don't forget 3.
masterigor 12-29-2004, 07:49 PM 5 because it's my lucky number
Monkey 12-30-2004, 05:31 AM 9.109 3826 x 10-31 kg - mass of electron
6.022 1415 x 1023 mol-1 - avogadros number
7.748 091 733 x 10-5 S - conductance quantum
6.626 0693 x 10-34 J s - planck's constant
the best number has to be "i" (for any non mathy people, i = imaginary number derived from the square root of -1)
blindwig 12-30-2004, 06:34 PM Hey, I remember being a "k-rad d00d"! You could always tell who the elites were, they always used the dark-grey color for their name with 1 or 2 letters in a bright color.
I think my favorite number to work with is 24. You can divide it in half, thirds, quarters, sixths, or eights (and technically twelveths, but I don't have the need to do that very often). And it's almost 25, so you can multiply it by 4 and almost have an even 100.
ashutosh9910 12-30-2004, 11:24 PM n(2n-2) = n(2n-2)
n(2n-2) - n(2n-2) = 0
(n-n)(2n-2) = 0
taking (2n-2) = 0
2n-2 = 0
2n = 2
n + n = 2
SO doesn't matter if you take any no. my favorite 2
:chuckle:
Ashutosh
My favorite number is 4.
Married at July 4th, 2003 and ever since I am a happy man :)
webbone 12-31-2004, 12:27 PM Wow... this thread keeps staying alive... I'm wondering what the Total, Average, Median, Min and Max are among the favorite numbers here? :chuckle:
elnerdo 12-31-2004, 12:37 PM That'd be hard to tell, as probably a third of the people are giving irrational numbers.. or imaginary numbers..
HyperHacker 01-01-2005, 02:12 AM 982,007,569, because:
1) It's 31337^2
2) It has '007' in it
3) It has '69' in it
Also Pi*E but I forget what that actually is. ^_^; I also tend to throw around 4,294,967,295 because it's a big number that I can remember (what with being 0xFFFFFFFF and all).
charlie 01-01-2005, 09:47 AM 7 and 42.
I was born o a 7th... my parents too... I met my 1st girldfriend on a 7th... I like it... It's really a lucky number for me despite of what people say... I think it's the 1st prime which is really strange
And 42 is (has been, was, will be -I hope-) very present in my life.
Monkey 01-01-2005, 02:36 PM the sideways 8 that has to be the best number ever imagined.
that should make the mean, maximum and total all being my other favourite number.
ps sideways 8:
good old infinite :chuckle:
That just leaves median, mode and minimum to be calculated.
