Search facility

Hi - A very vague and general question, but I'm really just after an idea of how to start.

I'd like to design a search facility for an existing website - for the whole site & specifically a forum, much like the search facility in this site.

Could anyone recommend how to start / what software to use?

I take it that the site utilizes a database. With this assumption made just use the SQL "SELECT" command along with the "LIKE" command and search the tables within your database, specifying wildcards with "%".
