probably a long shot-Snap Server

My Snap Server crashed today and I can't get it fixed. It emails me when there is a problem, and below is what the email said. I gather this is typical harddrive type information. I was wondering if anyone knew what any of this means. I have a Snap Appliance 1100 snap server. I've tried rebooting many times, but I keep getting the same diagnostics report in my email that something is wrong and I can't connect to it or anything.

Hi,

I'm no expert but it looks like a hardware error, especially if it keeps returning the same message each time you load.

FSCK is a utility that is similar to Chkdisk and obviously found some logical damage on device ride0g and 'fixed' it.

The permanent error is on device ride0a block number 47251776 which doesn't help too much. I took a quick look at the Adeptec support site and could not match the error to any known problems. Assuming that their version of FSCK is similar to Suns, the response to that error message is to "contact your vendor".

Doug

That's one of the things that is making me very angry. There is hardly any information on the site in regards to support.

update: I called in and it was a hardware error. I'm new at my place of work and didn't know that this wasn't being backed up...yet, I still got in trouble for it. Anyway, no charge for the phone call and we get a new one. Unfortunately, all the data on it is lost and some people are not happy about it. Lesson learned. Back up...back up...back up. I actually thought it was being used as a back up...well, it was...but people were also putting important files on there to share with other people that they weren't storing locally on their hd...this I had no idea of.

It's a hard lesson we all have to learn. If it's any consolation I think that about 99% of IT professionals have lost data through not backing up at one time in their careers :) Presumably there is something available to back this beast up to when you replace it. (or has anyone thought of that yet ?)

One very good thing has come out of your experience. You reminded me I hadn't backed up for a while - I have now.

I'm thinking of buying another snap server and having a snap-to-snap backup. I believe with the past IT guy who bought it, he was just backing it up to his PC. This is a 160 GB drive and he had an 80GB hard drive...doesn't sound like a very good long term solution to me. So, I'll be spending another $500.00 on one of these things I guess. Do you think heat could have caused a problem like that? I worry about their "server room" because all it really is is a hallway sort of deal with all the server crap on a rack...no extra air conditioning or anything. At what point do you need extra cooling?

When the air being sucked into the machines is too hot.

And exactly how do you know when it is "too hot"?

Hi,

Most equipment has a "safe" operating temperature range. You'll normally find it in the technical specifications. If the air temperature outside is greater than the max then it's running too hot.
