no pictures will display at runtime

i think i'm going nuts here...

in the form designer i can add either a panel or a picturebox, use the image or backgroundimage properties to manually select any image (gif, jpeg, png, doesn't matter) with no problems. but when i run my app, the pictures are not being displayed!!? this is so annoying i think i'm about to explode

please advice

hmm... yes, it works if i create a new project within the same solution, so there must be something within my main project which prevents all new images from being displayed at runtime.. (old images added before this behavior still displays fine, which is why this puzzles me... 'cos i haven't really changed anything)

there is no code, that's the point.. i want to be able to manually select what images i want to be shown on my form at designtime.. if i try to add them using code, it works (pnlHeading.BackgroundImage = Image.FromFile("heading.jpg"))
