Own function/classes in java

Alrighty people, i'm programming a java applet and my task is to generate two dice rolls and find out which dice has the highest value.

Now i've got the majority of this done but i'm having a problem with creating my own class/function

I've created my own class but i don't know how to return an integer value from my own created class to my main program (don't know how to do it full stop) meaning i have two seperate classes, sending one integer to another. From my VB days, i think it was something to do with by reference not sure o.O

Any help would be muchly appreciated,
