changing data type

I have a field that was a byte datatype and I needed to change it to an integer. I removed the original byte field and added the new integer field. The next day I was getting errors and noticed that the field had changed back to a byte. Why is this and how can I prevent it from happening again?

Strange one?

Could only assume your using Access.

The only comparable I know is Access can sometimes "lose" a table index or key, even after repairing.
