Editing Registry Settings

What is the API call and the parameters needed to take a registry setting and update the value? I'm VERY new to messing with the registry and I'm modifying existing code to open the correct key and hopefully extract the correct value. But I need to update the said value in the end with data from a text file. Any thoughts?
