Does anyone know how I can go back to using version 8.0 since I installed 8.1, because since I installed dirextx 8.1, it causes my screen to go all funny when I play games. Version 8.0 worked alot better, and never gave me as many problems. I just wanna know how I can get back to version 8.0.....I mean, u can't uninstall it (8.1), and when I try to install a version of 8.0 figuring it would write over 8.1, it does not. What can I do?
Thanks.

G'day!

You cannot safely uninstall DX8.1, it's considered a "system component" and cannot be downgraded. The only safe way to go back to 8.0 is to re-install your operating system.

Likely you have old drivers or DX did not install properly. The first thing to do is run dxdiag.exe (Start->Run dxdiag). Check the DirectX files tab, if there are problems there you should see some kind of alert icon beside some of the files. Additionally it should say in the Notes field if some components are older than others (possibly indicating an incomplete install).

Also, check the Display tab and run the DirectDraw and Direct3D tests.

Download the latest drivers for your card.

Microsofts actually released DirectX 8.2 (Really 8.1 with some DX7 components replacing the 8 ones, It is more stable though)
Microsoft's DirectX Website (www.microsoft.com/directx/)

G'day!

8.1b is the latest release that I'm aware of and it fixed a very small number of bugs in DirectShow and Direct3D. The Direct3D issues were:
-Fixes Direct3D-base screen savers, when the computer may be unable to enter standby or hibernation by using the timer in Power Management properties.
-Fixes some recent game titles that use DrawIndexedPrimitive() API with clipped TL vertices.
-Fixes flashing polygons/lines issues in some applications that used DirectX 8.0 DrawPrim(), DrawClippedPrim, DrawIndexedPrim() APIs.

And it has nothing to do with DX7 components at all.

Does this mean I can play GTA3 on my voodoo3 now?
Probably not.

G'day!

No, not too likely. Not many games will have clipped TL vertices. It wouldn't hurt to try, but unfortunately there's not much hope when the company that made the card went under. NVidia bought them out purely to get access to some of their technology, they never had any intention of supporting 3DFX stuff.

There's a good chance that DX9 won't run at all on a Voodoo, so it's probably time to look at upgrading.
