Personally, I don't want to see what others on this forum look like. I like to base my opinion of people in this forum totally by what they say, basically by who they are inside, not their appearance. Using a photo of oneself for an avatar may (even subconsciously) influence that opinion.

I like to use avatars that either reflect my perceived characteristics, or those I wish I had (albeit some unrealistic . . .)

It's like this: I have a tendency to post quite a bit. Sometimes,
everywhere I look, all I see are my posts. I got really tired of
seeing that statue over and over. But maybe someday I will find

I don't dislike avatars at all. Some of them are pretty cool. They add a lot to the look and feel of the forum. I just keep them off since I discovered that the forum pages load significantly faster for me when they're turned off. :)
