We are planning to develop a system using VB6 as front end running on Win98 and Linux7.0 as Server With MySQL as RDBMS. Is this Possible? Is this an efficient set up on a large system? How can I connect? What softwares will i need? H E L P!

This is a pretty complicated request but as a network guy with integrated NT, Novell and Linux Systems I can give you some help.

My understanding is that with VB6 you can attach to a variety of databases no matter what platform they are running on. If this is true (can anyone out there give some more info please???) then the issue is only getting rights to the users to use the Linux box from a Windows 98 computer.

The rights stuff is something that I have done before. The easy way is to put Samba on your Linux box and use it to configure the user's access to the box. Working with Samba is kinda like working with NTFS as you have to consider (somewhat) Linux's file system rights and the rights granted by Samba. NTFS has two parts that must be compatible - the share itself and then the security on the files.

Anyway, if you can get an answer on the VB6 issue, I can help you with the Samba part!
