Professional Menus

I've noticed that in popular applications like IE, MS Word, even VB have special menus. When you move the mouse over it, it raises up. or when you hit Alt, it is pushed out, not in. How is this done?

Are you talking about the toolbar or the menu itself? If the toolbar, there is a coolbar control you can use...

I just made a form with a menubar. When I pass the mouse over the items, they pop up like in IE....

Have I misunderstood?

(I am running Win98)

Maybe it's just my computer, but when I hit ALT in IE, it appears to raise it the area around the text "File". In my program, there seems to be a depression instead. Also, when I move my mouse over the menus in IE, it rasies the menu, but not in my program.

I am NOT talking about submenus, but the High level ones.

It's probably something to do with your version of windows, or maybe the service pack...

All of my windows apps have this raised menu look, if they have a menu at all.

Here is some info about my copy of Win98 which I pulled off of system info:

Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A
IE 5 5.50.4522.1800

I've also attached a bitmap of the calculator applet which shows the "view" menu raised because I had the mouse over it. The mouse itself doesn't show of course.

Yup. I guess that's what it is.

Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.1998
IE 5 5.50.4134.0600

What I have observed is that when the menu is not open, the button pops up if it is selected or has the mouse on it, and it presses in when you click on it, or when the menu is open.

There must be some problem with your VB or O.S.. Coz, last time i has a similar but different problem.. When i mouse over on menu.. It dont use to raise and the submenus dont open..
If i Double click on it, then it use to open & raise... I was totally amazed.. It only happens once with me.. After that i reinstalled VB6.. And it was working fine then...
