Default problem displaying text from my DB


here is my code..... The first column does not display.. its just blank. It is text. The second column is a date/time.. and that displays just fine.... what the heck am I doing wrong... if I put LEN() around the first column... it will display the length... but I cant get it to display the text from there... HELP

ok.. I think I have found the problem .. but need advise... I have a SQL 2008 server.. and it appears to be problem with using varchar(max)... anyone know a work around.. a different way to pull this data?
